Quick upgrade for 6870?

Thanks for the responses.

Do you have a decent cpu and psu?

Re : the 760, a good card for a good price.

I am looking to upgrade in the next few months if that makes any difference to the choice.

Currently have an i5 2500K and XFX Pro 650W Core.

If you want double the performance, I would suggest you spend a little more and get a R9 280 or 280x instead. The GTX760 is slower than both, and has only 2gb VRAM and 256-bit memory bus instead of 3gb and 384-bit memory bus of the 280/280x.

I will take a look at those, is it worth the price increase?

I did expect suggestions of crossfire with my current GPU but it's not great is it?

Thanks again :)

Thanks again guys.

The R9 280 seems to be a fair bit more in price. At the moment I only have a single monitor as well so surely the 3GB memory is overkill?

Would the GTX 760 be the best upgrade from the HD 6870 for the price?

Thanks :)

If you wish to keep the cost down, then I don't think you'll be disappointed at all with a GTX760. At it's normal price, I'd probably recommend the R9 270X, but in this instance it's a quite a bit closer. Although newer drivers for both teams will alter the numbers somewhat, I think this is still a decent enough guide for you to look at for present and future comparisons :

Edit : sorry to throw this into the mix, but I nearly forgot about this one :

Look at the games you play and see what brand gives the better performance. :)

Thanks again this is a really tough decision actually.

Ideally I want something that will last me and preferably for my new build as well. Just to check are there any new architectures etc for GPUs on the horizon? Any major changes?

Thanks for all of the responses.

Second hand is not really a route I would like to go down to be honest. So it would seem that the suggestions would be either a GTX770 or an R9 280X?

Is there an Nvidia equivalent to the 280X? Just curious to have a look at it if there is.

I am tempted now to get the R9 280X this would seem like the best thing to go for. What would be the best brand etc?

Thanks again :)

The performance chart is interesting, especially when comparing the 770 to the R9 280X.

I am playing DayZ quite a lot at the minute and the 770 is apparently better for battlefield 3. That might not bare too much significance though.

EDIT: So most people are suggesting a 3GB card does that leave only the R9 280X?

You could better my efforts by sending him flowers. :D

Haha, well thanks guys so much for all of the help.

I have taken a look, but now I have thought about it I think future proofing would be best for me at the moment. So looking at it like that, the R9 280X is the one to get compared to nvidias at a similar price due to the extra memory?

And if this is the case are there any other cheaper options to gigabyte? Or should I just take the plunge?

Thanks!!

For a 280X this is the best one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-091-HS

For a 280 i would get this one http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-171-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1842

All of them are faster than the GTX 760, the 280X is at least as fast as the GTX 770

A few of us have already said 3GB and the wider bus on the 280/X would be better.

Thanks, is that card not worse than the gigabyte? Looking at speeds anyway.

Cheers :)

Out of the Box yes, they both overclock so by the time you have it what those number say mean nothing, whats more the HIS has a better chance of clocking higher than the Gigabyte, there just better cards IMO, and cheaper :)

Thanks very much and I appreciate that :)

Its definitely a tough choice but the difference should be huge anyway between my current GPU!!

Ok guys me again lol.

I have been looking at more expensive graphics cards but I'm not sure if it's a stupid idea or not. Is the GTX 780 or the R9 290 worth the money compared to the R9 280X which I am looking at getting?

My concern is I will end up having to purchase a new graphics card again when I upgrade my rig in a few months. This of course depends on the new graphics cards that are released. So again I guess it comes down to performance and future proofing.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks! :)

The 290 is 30% faster than the 280X, so it is worth it for future proofing.

This one Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X 4096MB

Or this one Powercolor Radeon R9 290 PCS+ OC 4096MB

The 780 is a slightly slower card for a lot more money, IMO not worth it.

Many thanks for the response.

I am certainly tempted as I think it would probably hold its value for longer as well, should i want to change further down the line.

I have heard there were problems with some of these in terms of cooling, noise etc. Would the two you have suggested be OK for these things?

Thanks again :)

Also is there an advantage to getting the X versions?

I'm worried that the 280X might be better for future proofing compared to the standard 290. But I do not know the differences in X versions.

Thanks

Thanks again for the responses.

I think I am going to go with the R9 290 for various reasons. I think for future proofing it does seem to be the better option compared to the 280X, although it's more than I wanted to spend.

So before I finally decide which one would you guys suggest based on performance, sound levels, cooling, warranty etc? These are the four I have been looking at:

If there are any further suggestions please feel free.

Thanks again!

Clock speed is irrelevant if you'll be overclocking the card yourself (those factory overclock are very modest amount that pretty much any 290 can do).

You should consider price and warranty/rma service instead.

Thanks again.

So should I look at the standard 290's then? At the moment I am thinking the Sapphire 290 Tri-X OC. How would I overclock this, especially if I get the standard version?
