Quick upgrade for 6870?

I would overclock it, but if your going for the 290 then Mantle will make whatever lack of CPU performance you may have null in Games that support it.

I run a 4 year old AMD CPU in BF4, in normal DirectX the CPU is a problem, In Mantle its not.

In fairness Mantle is currently only in 2 games and one of the graphs you posted isn't even a game, just a tech demo!
That said I would, and did, pick the 290 option over the 780. Although the price difference was greater at the time.
I have said before that I'm quite disappointed with my 290s, but seeing the performance charts I'm not sure I'd have been much happier with 780s and given the price difference it probably wouldn't have been worth it.
It probably doesn't help that I have little interest in the current or future Mantle games and won't be playing them just because they have Mantle and I'm trying to justify it to myself.

As people have said in other similar threads, one thing that may be worth doing is finding out if the 780 or 290 offer the best performance in the games you intend to play. One card being better in 65% (random number plucked out of the air) of games doesn't mean much if 90% of the games you play fall into the other 35%.

To be honest coming from your current card you can't really go wrong with either.

GoogalyMoogaly, your constant negativity toward AMD is a little much.

I have Tested the 780 and found it wanting in comparison to the 290.

Its does not have as much real grunt, it does not like heavy GPU Physics, it gives very high FPS when just rendering images, but as soon as it has to do light shafts, shadowing or any sort of GPU compute loads and heavy texture fill it starts to choke, i wouldn't say it sucks the life out of the card but the 290 is defiantly better at dealing with real Graphics Rendering.

I didn't even think it did all that well compared to my old Tahiti LE.

Its good a 'flip book image rendering' throw real 3D rendering at it and it starts to choke.

But negativity toward Nvidia is ok?
I could say some of the positivity toward AMD gets a little much, but I'm happy to let people have their own opinion and I was just giving my opinion/experience.

In comparison to your findings, I think what has disappointed me about the 290CF is that it doesn't seem to be much better than my 670SLI setup.
You have your experience, I have mine. Why is it ok for you to post your opinion but not ok for me to post mine?

One of these days ill come down to cornwall and sort your computer out GM. You can teach me to water cool in return. :D

What games were you using for your "780 to choke" I would like a look at this real graphics rendering myself?

I don't have dirt showdown, and it seems not many others do, From choke are you suggesting the card struggled as at 1080 the benchmark thread has a stock 780 with min fps at 62 and an overclocked one with min fps at 81. With your 290 at 72 min fps?

That sounds pretty sweet. I've just been thinking again about the 280X and thinking that the extra £100 I save from the 290 could be spent on a new SSD.

None of my games are on my SSD as its only 60GB. I watched a video that is in one of the new threads in the graphics card section which talked about the difference SSD makes to games. Then I realised that actually as mine is so small none of them are on it!

The benchmark thread your talking about looks like this.

8. Score 94.43 GPU 290P @1100/1400, CPU Phenom II x6, @4.1, Humbug Link
9. Score 81.93 GPU 780 @888/1251, CPU 4770k, @4.0, Whyscotty Link
10. Score 80.54 GPU 7950 @1175/1650, CPU 2700K, @ 4.6GHz, MyBrains Link
11. Score 72.85 GPU 7870XT @1200/1600, CPU Phenom II x6, @4.1, Humbug Link
12. Score 31.17 GPU 7850 @1230/1470mhz, CPU [email protected], wazza300 Link
I have an old AMD CPU, My Minimum FPS with that CPU are hardly a barometer.

LtMatt has a CPU closer to Whyscotty and his 780, he gets 62, Matt gets 75
Gregster with a GTX Titan and a 3930K gets 81.

DS has more compute based lighting, shadowing and reflection than anyother game, its a billboard for compute 3D rendering.

Its the perfect test for a GPUs ability to render anything other than flat lifeless imagery.

Nvidia do well with simple Graphics, if things start to get complicated they don't do as well as AMD.

lol a 'true' AAA title which hundreds of thousands of people play. What a way to disprove your own point.

Humbug didn't really have a 780 so take what he says with a pinch of salt.

lol... one game and thats it?

I don't want to be rude/ignorant but I don't actually understand the point you guys are making. Could you explain to me please?

Thanks!

For me there was 2 parts. The first was linking the benchmark thread Ian was talking about for clarification. The second part was showing that this game that the 780 is so bad in, still has it performing about as well as the 290s in the benchmark thread. The 290X outperforms the 780 though.
