I recently rebuild my laptop which has a Vista Business license using the recovery DVD. It built fine and activated with no probs but I've just remembered today that it never asked for a product key. I ran slmgr and this reports a fragment of the product key which isn't the 1 on the base of the lappie.

Now bearing in mind it's activated OK and has been running fine for a few months now do I really need to go in and change the key to reflect the actual license stuck to the underside of the lappied, in all honesty I don't want to mess as it's running fine but it got me wondering, the recovery DVD must have a product key recorded in it for the install to complete, yes.

Stupid question I know but I'm known for asking stupid things :)

The product key is most likely on the recovery DVD as the disk has most probably be built with the Vista equivalent of nLite (vLite) where your Laptop Manufacturer has put the product key in for you which is most likely a VLK or System Builders key (right terms?).

Basically right, it'd be preactivated using the Vista Preinstallation kit. They key is of a special type of which I can't remember the name :(

So I suppose I should really change this preinstall key to the correct key? I suppose I should read the docs that came with the laptop but I'd have thought it would have asked me on first boot.
