JUst curious, OEM version means you can only install for the Hardware configuration you have originally? I thin kthats the theory behind the stupid OEM vista but wanted some confirmation.

Is it onyl when you change Motherboards that Vista says no to you and makes you buy another one :P

I just got a new motherboard myself and am not looking to upgrade for a long while [ideally]. The last Asus one I bought had a faulty IDE channel. Seeing as it was my first Asus purchase I won't be buying from them again. Gigabyte have been consistently good though.

Vista OEM is the same as XP OEM.

The ONLY difference is that MS may enforce their OEM licencing rules a bit more tightly with Vista. With XP it's been fairly easy for some people to activate their OEM copy even after changing their mobo. Now some people will tell you that LEGALLY you aren't licenced even though MS have allowed you to activate in this case. But most users aren't concerned so much about the morals/technical legality of their licence and are just happy if MS allow them to activate.

With Vista you MAY still find there is a similar situation with OEM licences, but there is also a rumour that MS may tighten up a bit on activation and not let you activate in such situations!

That is the ONLY difference as far as I can tell!

Yeah my Gigabyte just started changing my memory and cpu clock speeds and I was like eh?! thought it was actually a cpu problem but I had loads of other hardware sitting about so I just eliminated the possibilities, more than happy with my Asus tho! The good thing for me is I'l have 2 copies of Home Premium due to the fatc I bought one off OCuK and I have a free upgrade from Microsoft coming too! So I guess I have a backup if things go bad!

Indeed after changing my Mobo I managed to activate Windows XP MCE 2005 no problem at all, I didnt know that was the case with those OEM's too otherwise i would have been worried :D

Either way hopefully the OEM is like the old one
