Need some advice before i pre-order Windows 7

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 which just over 2 years with vista installed

My question is will Windows 7 run ok with the drivers , my spec is below , i did talk to dell but they was about much use as a chocolate tea pot

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 Processor (2.0GHz,800MHz,4MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium
17" UltraSharp™ Wide Screen WUXGA (1920x1200) TFT Display with TrueLife
4048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM
nVidia® GeForce™ Go 8600M GT with 256MB DDR2
Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth

You can use this to scan your PC and check whether it'll be ideal for a Windows 7 upgrade.

However, by looking at the specs - I'd say you're good to go...

Drivers for hardware?

I'd expect it will be fine. Problems are usually with old manufacturer provided utilities not working for things like power management, bluetooth and things like that. Windows 7 usually defaults back to the standard methods. As always take a backup before upgrading just in case...

I was told that Windows 7 is based on XP ?
Very loosely - In Windows 7 Professional and above, it can run a "Windows XP Mode" which lets you run applications in an Windows XP environment... I heard in beta it worked okay but not perfect and sometimes was quite laggy.

Not sure if it's all working well in the retail versions now...

No. If it's anything then it's a development of Vista and Server 2008.

As said above certain versions ship with an XP mode which runs XP SP3 inside a virtual machine to allow you to run incompatible apps and badly written websites/apps that need IE6.
