Hi all,

I am currently running an illegal version of windows xp pro (not my fault :p ) and am going to get a retail version. Now if I backup my system using the windows "Backup" program to another hard drive. Format my hard drive, install a retail version of XP HOME will I then be able to restore by backup and run from the retail XP HOME?

Thanks

do you need to backup installed applications as I doubt this will work.

If not, just grab a good size flash drive, external HDD or DVD. Main items to copy are:-

My Docs (inc. Pic, Music, Vids, etc)
Favourites
Emails (use the import/export function)
and any .exe prog files or installer applications you may have.

Its the serial number whats important. MS have deemed that yours has been distributed. After you have copied all your important stuff (as above), before you wipe the drive, have a go at installing your new retail version over the top of your current version...

I've never been in your situation, so I dont know what would happen. Just curious.. If you do, would you let us all know what happens?

I suppose the best bet would be to wipe the drive, as your using an illegal copy, it may have been comprimised...

Let Windows Update do its stuff installing WGA. Then read the message that pops up. Not been there myself but I'm told they offer to take a payment in exchange for a valid serial with the ability to convert to a legal version with no re-install needed.

That's indeed true, it's in the sticky. Its a lot cheaper to go through the WGA programme then buy a copy from a shop, and you'll geta a full retail license.

I would try to do a repair install, to keep all your apps and files, but that might not work seeming your 'downgrading' to Home.

If you use Windows Backup, I doubt you'll be able to restore the system state.
