Hi,
0
I am looking at monitors around 24", mainly for gaming (mainly RPGS/MMO's with the occasional other game that takes my fancy) for my new build and need some quick advice as I am planning to order tonight. Was a bit cofused as to if HDMI is enough or if I need something with DVI monitor as I was eyeing up this one:

I am getting a Asus GeForce GTX 560Ti Graphics Card, budget...200-300, 200 would be nicer but I am willing to go up to 300 for something suitable :)

PS. Sorry for the title, was meant to say Quick Help! :P

Thanks!

Hi there, when you say "mainly for gaming" may I ask what kind of gaming you are mainly into?

If it is mainly fast-paced online shooters then a very responsive 120Hz monitor like the LG W2363D would be ideal - since the 120Hz refresh rate makes quick motion feel smoother and these monitors are built for speed so there is minimal ghosting an no input lag.

However, if you are into less fast paced gaming (like RPGs) then a slightly slower, but higher image quality monitor using an IPS panel (as opposed to a TN panel in cheaper/faster monitors) would be a good bet. Of these I would suggest this ASUS or this Dell. E-IPS panel like the ones used in these monitors offer much more accurate colours and wider viewing (so colours don't shift when you move you head slightly from dead-centre) compared to TN panel monitors, however they aren't quite as a good in terms of response time - so for really fast paced games they aren't ideal.

Finally, is there anything else you do a lot with your PC (like photoshop or watching movies)? For these things an IPS monitor would be a better choice due to generally higher image quality.

As for your question on DVI, for standard 1080p@60Hz monitors like the Samsung you linked to or the Dell and ASUS I linked to above - both HDMI and DVI have sufficient bandwidth to carry this signal and both are identical in terms of image quality, therefore don't let the presence or abscence of a DVI port affect your choice much for these 1080p@60Hz monitor. However, if you plan to go for a 120Hz 1080p monitor then HDMI bandwidth is no longer sufficient - you need to either go for a dual-link DVI connection or a Displayport 1.2 connection -depending on which monitor you are looking at.

Here are some reviews for the monitors I mentioned above:

Dell U2312HM
ASUS ML239H
LG W2363D (this may be tough to get hold of as it seems to have just gone end-of-life, hopefully a successor appears soon)

Thanks mainly RPGs for the most part, I go into others if theirs an offer but other that mainly gaming :)

Thanks for the tip, think I will just go with the samsung then as I quite like the look and the main thing putting me was the DVI slot :)

Thanks for the advice!
