Quickest / easiest way to create an animated gif

Hi all

I'm looking at creating an animated gif with text that fades out, more text fades in and repeats... What is the quickest / easiest way to create this? What software would you recommend?

I prefer doing this in Adobe Fireworks (I'm using an old CS3 version). I think it can be done in Photoshop too.
