I'm looking to spend £600 - £700 for a new TV for our student house next year. I was going to spend around £650 on a 46 inch Samsung LCD which looks absolutely stunning in the flesh. It's the one with red edges with an odd looking glass thing which extrudes at the front.

I then noticed that the same figure will buy full 1080p HD Plasma screens of about 50 inches. Is there actually any major disadvantage of opting for the Plasma over the LCD? It's not as 'attractive' in the flesh but at that price it seems a steal or are the budget Plasmas best avoided?

Staying clear of 3D and LED because I'm not prepared to pay the premium. I'm just after 46 inches or more and a decent screen that won't dissapoint.

Cheers

It's hard to say what is better

IMO LCD is the way forward - However, many people still prefer the picture on a Plasma TV, especially when watching Standard Def TV on screen sizes 50"+

Plasma's are very heavy and use more energy / produce more heat compared to LCD's also.

Plasma's are also more expensive to repair when they go wrong.

As long as you, your housemates, the TV and a couple of pizzas can all fit in the same room go for the Plasma :)

Aye go for Plasma Panasonic 2010 like TXP50S20 is good value or G20 for better specs. Or even LG 50PK350/590/790/990 is highly regarded on avforums. If you can ignore the edge sharpening and nice and cheap..

Have you felt the weight of the current gen plasmas ? there not heavy at all, and as for energy, its very little between the too tech's now.

Heat they do give off, but is that really a problem ?, also as far a plasmas when they go wrong, the cost isnt really that much more, screen for screen works out the same, but get a good one, and most places offer 5year warrantys so it doesnt really matter.

Nothing quite like walking into somebody's house where the living room is about 10' square and there is some huge 60" LCD/Plasma occupying the entire room and you are sat so close that you cant fit the whole TV into your field of vision and you get a sun tan from the RF that it is emitting. I know people say buy the biggest that you can, but there has to be some sense of propotionality to the room that it is going into.

Yes, but this does not apply if you are in a student house. You have the rest of your life to be sensible.
