QuickTime and iTunes freezing, possible codecs or OSX issue?

I've recently received a refurb Macbook Pro (in sig), however when I update to 10.6.8 and all the other updates, along with installing DivX I have issues with QuickTime and iTunes freezing. It freezes before I've even attempted to play anything, which is the weird thing about it.

Has anyone had any experience with this? I've had the Apple Store run hardware diagnostics overnight, however it came back perfect. It's just QuickTime and iTunes that I'm having issues with.

Any help will be much appreciated :)

Open Disk Utility and repair permissions. Verify Disk. Re open iTunes.

If problem persist. Create a new iTunes Library by holding down the 'option' key (alt) when clicking the iTunes icon.

Last resort uninstall/reinstall iTunes.

Only the airport utility help files are coming up as issues when verifying permissions and iTunes crashes even with nothing in my library  same goes for QuickTime.

I've reinstalled OSX a number of times and tried a different hard drive, but it still does the same thing. I can't help but think xvid has something to do with it, but then my other macbook pro had no issues with it on the same OSX version. As I said, Apple's hardware diagnostics have come back clear as well after 24 hours of testing.

I've raised an RMA anyways as it's within 14 days, but I'd still like to try and attempt to work out what's wrong in the meantime if I can.

Did you actually try the second and third suggestions I made? Just because the library is empty doesn't mean it's not worth trying to create a new library to solve it or reinstalling iTunes rather than the whole OS.
