I’m using a mac mini as a htpc and its great, it would be even better if I could use front row for video but I can’t because its so so much quieter than vlc, even at full volume the video through quicktime is just too quiet and its frustrating because vlc gets it easily loud enough.

Is there anything I can do? I’m using snow leopard.

Perhaps the Sound Check option in iTunes has been enabled, this would dampen the sound down to a lower level in iTunes to keep them all at the same level, but also perhaps in Front Row?

I don't actually know if this applies to video but its worth a look, otherwise its likely that because VLC doesn't use QuickTime to do its playback that its just different, could you not get a nice pair of external speakers to resolve the volume issue?
