god damn i hate QuickTime - iTunes insists that it needs to be on my system and i wouldn't mind if it just kept itself quiet but even on my luvly new fresh install of winxp, its causing probs:

1) when i first installed itunes the install failed inbetween the itunes and the quicktime install... and ended up giving me "the program has encountered an error blah blah" so in the end i installed a standalone version of quicktime and that enabled me to get into iTunes thank god

2) whenever quicktime comes up (cuz it takes over all your visual formats) the computer restarts!!!

anyone know why this is happening? it wouldn't be a bad little player if it wasn't so damn buggy (even tho its on version 7!!! - not exactly a beta release is it!)

hmmm, will installing that mean i can uninstall QT and still have iTunes work?

i don't really want it at all but that would be a solution... maybe theres a way to stop iTunes "needing" (god knows what for) QuickTime?

iTunes needs Quicktime for H.234 codec, AAC codec etc.

Quicktime keeps itself very quiet on my computer, no problems with it - how about checking the file type associations in the preferences ;)

never had a problem with it myself, find it quite useful actually, it plays some videos (mostly from mobile phones) which no other player I have will play. Also, you do actually need quicktime for itunes to work, alternative wont do. You could always go back to itunes 4.7 which doesnt require quicktime to run, doesnt crash all the time for no reason, updates which song is playing properly (come on apple, version 6 and the little speaker icon doesnt update, what the hell!?), and it doesnt have the silly 5 user per day limit on sharing. No podcasts though :/

Install QuickTime iTunes... Remove all instances of QuickTime and iTunes from windows startup, sorted.

cant say i understand what you mean...

tried a few things now including switching off my virusscan and whatnot and cant explain why on earth my computer resets  - it happens if i play a movie clip through iTunes after about 20 seconds, the audio just kicks out a machine gun effect of whatever audio is playing then the pc restarts :(

i have two installations of windows on this pc, both damn near identical cuz i'm testing some stuff, and it works fine on my secondary windows... anyone have any clue why my computer would be resetting due to iTunes?

right, just done a bit of investigating and i can confirm that the computer reboots when:

- i play a move through iTunes

- i play a movie through QuickTime without iTunes even being open

- i play a movie through QuickTime Alternative  (i removed QuickTime and installed Alternative, iTunes still worked which suprosed me but the resetting still happened)

the machine does not reboot when watching a vid through MP10

SO... whatever is triggering the reboot is related to the three above things, if someone could shed some light it would be very much appreciated... whats the thing they have in common? the codecs or summat?

Try re-installing sound card drivers.

hmmmmm... i re-installed the sound drivers, didn't make any difference (still rebooting)

however, on the back of that i then reinstalled my NForce mobo drivers and all that chipset crap... iTunes & QuickTime seems to be fine now (touch wood) - so thanks very much :) - lets hope it holds out ;)
