Quiet 8800GT/GTS or wait..... ?

Hi All,
Bit of advice needed please...

My current system is not silent but is very quiet, Gigabyte DS3P board, E6600 undervolted to 0.9volts, Hard drive suspended with bungee cord, x 3 Panaflow 80mm fans (x2 intake, x1 exhaust) @5volts, Corsair 520watt psu, and 1950Pro Sapphire Ultimate (come with Zalman cooler) graphics card.

So the replacement card must also be very quiet as well, and must allow full fan control adjustment via software e.g. with ATI Tool, Rivatuner etc

One obvious choice would be the 'Sparkle GeForce 8800 GT "Cool Pipe 3" http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-012-SK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008
but I'm slightly concerned that the airflow in my case will not be sufficient, and that the price is not that far off getting a GTS.

So was also thinking about the EVGA GTS,

when considering it comes with Crysis the card itself is not too badly priced and has a slight overclock, plus I like the fact that the heat is exhausted out of the case.

Will the GTS be quiet enough for my needs, and is the fan speed fully adjustable?

Of course the other option would be to wait for the 9 series of cards, but I fear the wait for a decent mid/high end card will be a long time?

Any advice appreciated!

i beleive the GTS is a quieter cooler. What is your case and what air cooling do you have in it, fans etc?

The fan is also fully adjustable with a simple tool like the gainward expert tool. Overclocks it to if you want.

The 9 series are far away still i dont think tis worth waiting if you need a new card now as they will be very expensive. Your looking at probably june at the earlyest.

Hi, Its a Lian-Li PC60, has x2 80mm intakes, both running @ 5volts, and x1 80mm exhaust which is on a Zalman fan mate.

Or do what I and a few others have done and buy cheapest : at moment

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-002-PN&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1008

and swap cooler for an

Always assuming it will fit your case etc

also planning to get the same thing for my other rig.. although i noticed the description on the cooler said "8800GT (Requires VRM Heatsinks)".. which one to get? do i really need to get VRM heatsinks?

I received the 1st edition of the cooler which did not contain the VRM heatsinks - fortunately had some spare 'old' ram sinks which I was able to use.
Allegedly Arctic Cooling say sinks not required for VRM - took view myself better be safe than sorry.

Had read would have difficulty in getting sinks to stick , bought some thermal tape BUT found it was not needed.

As this my '1st' I probably went a little OTT in that I cleaned both ram & vrm twice with Akasa tim cleaner and lastly once with alcohol before trying to stick AND per another's advise by pressing on with firm pressure for at least 30sec. whn looking to affix.

This has it seems resulted in 'em all sticking:D

P.S. I understand that the reason they can be difficult to stick is because if any of the existing stuff is left - even a small trace - then the new sinks may not stick

I have just got a 8800GTS and I am very happy with it. I was also undecided between that and the GT, but for the sake of a few pounds more I thought it was just about worth it. :)

If your x1950pro is still doing the biz then wait! and if it's still doing the biz after the 9xxx comes out then keep waiting;)

then be prepared to pay a lot for it. 400-500 on release is the going rate for the GTX i beleive?

The GTS will always soon become second rate in gaming. Obiously not straigth away but it seems its only ever the top card (*well excluding the ultra) which will stay at the top maxing out the games. the others bellow have to make comprimizes. Obiously the new GTS and GT kinda bennt this rule some what but they arnt the same acuteture and still cant beat the GTX.

Always a concern when u go for supreme silence :)

Airflow greatly helps out but regardless ive noticed if your gonna use high end cpus and highend graphic cards there always gonna require some active cooling even at 5volt fans, my 8800GTX with the HR thermalright passive heatsink was great but passive it wasnt a good option ;) one 120mm 5volt fan and perfect.

Gonna add some active cooling on my hdds once inside a Japanese Gup silent box (there 60 quid !) and my GPU/Cpu will have 5volt fans hopefully thats enough for silence!
