Quiet and Fast?

I'm using a GTX285 at the mo and while I'm fairly happy with the performance I would like it to be quieter.

My current thoughts are to either get some kind of aftermarket cooler or upgrade to something like a 5870 with a decent cooler (vapor X or something like that). From what I gather the 5870 is a bit better than the 285 but I'm not sure its really worth bothering for the slight improvement in performance and the decrease in noise.

While I wouldn't condsier myself an Nvidia fanboy, I was won over a few years ago by the 8800gts as equivelant ati cards such as the 2900 were slower and had ropey drivers. I gather that has changed now and ATI are making better drivers these days?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcomed.

Cheers

I see. Have you given it a clean or noticed that temps have risen over a period of time? If so then I'd try getting rid of any fluff, that'll mean lowered temps, less noise and heat.

Its pretty clean as I give it a dust quite often. I don't think the airflow in my case is very good as its quite small and cramped and only has 3 fans, I'm cosidering getting a fractal case with some extra fans to see if that reduces the noise further without increasing temps. The Fan profiles idea sounds good, I might give that a try.
