Quiet but highly audiable and annoying hissing from amp?

Hi

I have an Audiolab 8000s.

Recently I have noticed that one of the speakers is making a constant hissing (from the tweeter and upper of the two cones that supply the midrange sound).

It appears to be the amp that is sending a bad signal as:

-The volume of the hissing changes as the volume on the amp is moved
-The hissing is audiable even when the amp is at the lowest volume setting
-Disconnecting everything from the amp makes no difference to the sound
-When playing a CD, the hissing is still audiable over the music during periods of silence.

Any ideas as to what it is?

Thanks

My cyrus pre amp did this. Ended up selling it on the bay as faulty. Seemed it was a repair job but your situation may be different.

It's not a mains hum or anything is it? Is your power supply filtered at all? I use a 'Russ Andrews' filtered power block which seems to help a little.

Hope you get it sorted pal!

Its not the amp making the noise though its the speakers

Rot. Speakers don't introduce noise by themselves, it's the source and amplifier. The Audiolab 8000S is near silent when not in use (I had one)

Although if you do have incredibly efficient speakers (100db+) it'll reproduce the noise floor of the amp louder.

Try another amplifier, if the speakers are fine then it's the amplifier.
