Quiet Network Storage System?

Looking at building a system primarily for storage, instead of a NAS Drive.

Needs to be very quiet as it'll probably end up in a bedroom, and need to be able to hold a few drives, storage/backup of those. Budget is about £250-400 or so, for the tower and all the bits needed with that.

If it's possible to be done even cheaper a monitor/kb/mouse would be beneficial but not essential as can connect it up to the TV if needed.

Storage needed is about 1.5TB at least, more the better! Kinda looking at the option of 500-750GB drives as the storage, and larger ones for archive backups of those, definitely want primary storage and a backup system of some sort (anyone got any other ideas for that?).

Kind of thinking the budget isn't even needed to be that high? If it's possible to be done cheaper, and be nice and quiet and then that's fine really! Was looking at the barebones systems for very cheap, but not sure how quiet they are?

Any help would be very much appreciated, not kept a look at all the new hardware for a long while now!

what hardware have you got laying about?

can you use any of your existing pc (ie things you want to upgrade) to help with the build?

Most of our hardware is a bit faulty nowadays, our storage system atm is a 550mhz tower which is REALLY noisy now. Apart from that there's possibly (depending whether we can salvage them) an Athlon 2800, P4 1.6 and a 333mhz somewhere.

Other than that, nothing really!

Can't use any of my current machine, being an iMac.

Would be nice to have something that supports 3-4+ HDD's if possible.
