I bought a cooler master x-slim ii for its ‘silent’ 200mm fan and was disappointed to note it sounded like a tornado. Given the box had been kicked in before it reached me I gave the company the benefit of the doubt and ordered a new one which came today and also sounds like a jet engine.

The product is advertised as ‘silent’ but in inverted commas. Perhaps cooler master is having a laugh in the same way that Megan is a ‘much loved’ member of the royal family?

Good gag Cooler master you got me twice! Your ‘silent’ product is very ‘silent’.

What do I try next?

Honestly, if you have a soldering iron, patience and a little spare cash. Build one.
It's what I did, because basically 5v fans aren't that good to be honest. If it's "quiet" its rubbish, half the fans aren't as quiet as they say they are either.

Get a decent aluminium tray with decent clearance, 2 high pressure 140mm 12v fans, if you want really quiet there's noctua, but that's like 25 a fan, a 2 into 1 4pin connector. I used a 5v to 15v usb converter. Even with the slight overvolt, my arctic fans make very little noise and push good air too. Get a couple of dust filters, see where your intakes are on your laptop and mount the fans underneath them. It there aren't holes where you need them, for mounting or for airflow a good cordless and drill bit will sort that out.
For the performance these laptops have and the lame cooling I really do think making these kind of beasts is necessary for better temps.

Thanks I appreciate your response but sadly I have little free time for such projects. It does sound awesome though.
