Hi.
Out of curiosity, has anyone here ever managed to build a system that was pretty powerful, quiet/silent, was air cooled, had good temps and didnt cost a shed load in cooling components to do so?

Just a curiosity really. :).

When I had my PC in my V2000 the loudest part was the hard drive.

2 x Yate Loon fans.
Intel stock cooler for E6320 @ 2.5Ghz.
8800 Ultra fan @ auto setting

It was amazingly quiet. I coudnt hear it at all.

I'm currently running a Gigabyte P35-DS4 with an E4300 overclocked to 3.4GHz, and 2Gb of Crucial PC8500 RAM. Running 4 HDD in RAID 10 and an 8800GTX graphics card. That lot is cooled by the stock EVGA graphics card cooler, a Thermalright HR-01 with duct and two Yate-Loon D12-SL12 120mm fans. The PSU is a 480W Tagan SilentPower and it's all sitting in a Lian Li S80B case. The motherboard temperature is 38C, with a CPU loaded temperature of 56C. And it's silent. If you spin up an optical drive you can just hear it, but otherwise it is genuinely silent. You have to check the lights are on to know it's running.

Mine is bloody close to inaudable. Specs are:

Sonic tower w/ cardboard shroud + 2x silent eagle 1000s running at 7v through a fan controler (these are the only noise makers at 1m and are much quieter than any of my 12cm yate loons at 5vs).

2 x 14cm Yate Loons for intake @ 5v (noiseless at 50cm away)

1 x 24cm Fan in the side of my iCute case @ 5v (slight clicking fades at aprox 50cm away)

2 x Wester Digital Scorpio SATA 2.5" drives suspended by rubbery string - inaudable @ 1m

1 x 7900gs 512mb cooled by a evercool turbo 2 with the fan @ 7v (so very quiet - no ram cooling with this cooler though)

1 x Antec Phantom 500 - really really great power supply if you get a good sample. Mine runs silent.

E4300 @ 2.8Ghz, 7900GS overclocked by around 20% (can't remember exactly), 2GB Kingston 667Mhz RAM. MSI 650i SLI.

my last athlon system ihad was pretty silent helps if you can get passive things like i had a passive x800xl no fans. also i notice there is a passive x1950pro available

Careful about passive components in a system with low airflow. Entirely passive PCs are really really hard to do for example.
