Quietening down a noisy computer ...

Hi all,

My PC is really beginning to annoy me being so noisy all the time, so I want to spend some time and money to quieten the little fellah. (See below for my current specs).

I think the worst culprits are the CPU cooler and the PSU. With quietness in mind and bearing in mind also that i'm not overclocking, i'm thinking about replacing them with the following:

* Scythe Ninja Plus Rev B CPU Cooler (with no fan)
* Corsair 620W ATX2.2 Modular PSU

Any thoughts or different suggestions on the above? Would I get away with a 520W power supply with my setup?

Current specs:

Abit AW9D-MAX with E6600 and stock Intel cooler (not overclocked)
BFG 8800GTS 640mb
4gb geil ram
3 x hard discs
BFG 800W power supply
Lian-Li PC V2000A PLUS (lovely case :cool:) currently running 2 x 120mm case fans

Thanks, any input really appreciated!

I assume you've tried changing the speeds of the fans? Ie. slowing the RPM's so the fan's run quieter? The components you've picked seem a good choice, have heard nothing but good things about those corsair PSU's

Thanks for such speedy replies, no I haven't tried speedfan, will that allow you to adjust the fan speeds of the cpu cooler and psu?

It'll only let you control the speeds of the fans connected to your motherboard's headers. So yes for CPU fan, but not for PSU.

What make are the HDDs and the 12cm fans?

Options could be to get a fan controller, or to swap the fans with quieter ones within your budget (Xilence for cheap, Nexus for mid, Noctua for expensive)

Graphics card makes a big impact on noise and i can audibly identify each component in my PC. Mine is very loud, but that's unavoidable with my spec/case.

sorry to hijack this thread... but V3g3tto, does your psu really handle ** system..?
my 520w couldn't, so i got a second 350w just for my gfx and cooling gear(pump & fans)

Yes. In fact, a 550w would probably suffice. I believe there are tools on the net that work out power consumption of parts, but as a guideline:

HDD = 10-20w
mid-high end Graphics Card = 100-150w?
CPU = 95w

Then it's just fans, mobo,etc. I'd say i got plenty of headroom.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've just taken the side off my pc, and though difficult to tell, i'm pretty sure most of the noise is coming from the cpu cooler. Graphics card is ok, psu is not too bad (not great) but the cpu seems like a much higher pitch (its spinning at about 2,000 rpm according to the bios).

So, I think i'm going to try the Scythe ninja, it should be quieter and if nothing else will allow me to overclock a little with the fan attached. Think i'll leave the psu for now, see what difference that makes.

Thanks again for all replies.

i havew that mobo and have all my 4 case fans and my cpu fan plugged into the headers on the mobo, the abitguru overclocking utility that comes with that mobo allows for full control of the fans speeds while in windos itself. you set percentage values for power om them and can monitor there rpms providing you got fans with rpm monitor ables on them ie not 2 wire ones.
also you set temperture and for when the fans are to increase speed and it auto speeds them up if it reaches that temp. its great
