hi all, ok I have a spare pc which I am thinking of now using as a htpc/gaming pc in the living room behind the tv, but unfortunately it is a bit on the loud side for a living room as previously I have no need for quietness due to pc room and using headphones, ok so I want to make it quieter, so my current spec is x79 setup with 3930 cpu, 780 ti, 16gb ram, 950watt psu, corsair 800d tower, corsair aio cpu cooler with 2 fans currently, 2 hdd's, 3 ssd's and 6 other fans elsewhere, so would I be better off with a slightly smaller tower with quiet running fans already in or just replace all of my current fans with silent ones, and would any of these be worth doing, or any other suggestions, cheers.

Depends what the existing fans are. I's hard to say if other fans would be improvements without knowing what you have already.

Also the AIO pump could be quite noisy so give that a listen to see if the noise from that bothers you as it may end up louder than any new fans you fit.

Best thing i would suggest is to remove all fans except for the AIO ones, see how the noise is going. If its got quieter then one of the switched off fans is the issue. If the noise persists then its AIO fans or your 780ti gfx card causing the noise.

If its the fans you can look at reducing the RPM on them, or replacing them with something quieter. Take a look at the make/model to determine the RPM/CFM and decibel rating of each fan and see if you can locate something quieter but watch out for the cost. I just purchased 3x 140mm Silent Wings and these cost total of £60.

You might find this explanation of airflow and how to setup case airflow guide of interest.

ok cheers guys, I will take some out and check the ratings, the 140mm ones are the ones that came with the corsair 800d, one cools the hdd cage, one cools the hot swap bay, one exhaust's out the back and one at the bottom bringing cool air in, I then have the 2 at the top on the aio pushing air out of the top, a second one at the bottom, and one in the front bringing cool air in,

What viberiois said.
Disconnect all apart from the CPU /aio fans and reassess noise and temps.
Then start reconnecting fans and reassessing.

Also how many hdds have you got? Mechanical drives can make a surprising amount of noise even when mounted with rubber grommets.

Example I have 3 mech drives and an SSD, 2 of the mech drives are basically music backups that don't need changing often, so I've unplugged thier power cables and it makes a difference.
