Hi guys

Am looking some advice. Have a 48 port enterprise switch and it has 3 40mm fans in it which are loud.

I have tried doing the 7v mod by swapping the red and black wires on the fans but this didnt work. Fans didnt spin up

Fans have red black and white wire, I am assuming the white wire is so the switch knows the fans are running,

Anyone any ideas of how to quiet it down...

Does it have a temperature reading on the switch? It might be fine with the fans disconnected since you won't be stressing it at home..

You could try adding an inline resistor between the power source and the fan itself. Appropriate value would depend on the current draw and voltage of the fan. The resistor would lower the current seen by the fan, and reduce the speed it'll run at.

Those 40mm fans draw a fair bit of current though.

The 7v trick uses the difference between 12v and 5v on a Molex. This won't work when you only have 5v, or 12v available.

You could try replacing the fans with something a little quieter, if you can find something suitable.

As bledd mentions the unit might work just fine with no fans running, or maybe just have one running, or ghetto mod an external 80-120mm fan with tape on the opening to draw the air out.
