With the HIS on offer today I started thinking about upgrading. But I'm after the quietest 5770 without changing the cooler myself.

I would prefer venting out the rear, but it's not completely required as current card doesn't external vent.

Going by TechPowerUp site I've got a Powercolor 4670 PCS at 24.2 dbA

So far the MSI Hawk 5770 at 24.8 dbA looks the quietest, but not search all available cards.

Any quieter models? If recommend a different graphics chip I don't want to upgrade PSU. Using a Corsair HX450W with a second hand 4870 it causes sequeal under load. Playing at 1680x1050.

on that review it says with one side of the case removed.. On my Antec P182 I really struggle to hear any fan noise from my Sapphire X.. Actually truth be told, i went out and got a 5850 to replace my single 5770, but could hear the fan so sold that and decided to go 5770 x-fire instead.. Not looked back since i am very VERY fussy when it comes down to background noise.

Hey Bane :)

How come your going for the HD 5770? . . . isn't the GTX 460 768MB a better choice now?

HD 5770 vs GTX 460 (768MB)

I was considering one, but got a second hand 4870 instead. Just the 4870 is causing PSU to buzz when under load, so I imagine a 460 would too.

It would be cheaper to buy a new PSU, but the heat of the 4870 also put me off. So looking at efficieny instead of raw performance of a 460.

Will probably hold out and see what ATIs new range is like, or until 5770 drop in price further to compeat against GTX 460 768MB.

Holding out for the new 6xxx series is an idea as they might not be that far away (ETA?? nope? ok.) but the 768mb 460 easily outperforms the 5770 so it will have to be priced well below to be a good buy, especially if you want the quietest model (supposed to be the vapor-x which is also one of the better performers) which is the costliest model and cost more than the current low end 460s (which are still awesome).

this shows that idle the 768mb uses less power than a standard 5770 and only 20 more when under load. What power supply do you have at the moment? If its anything like a half decent 500w or a very good 400-450 then you are fine.

There is nothing replacing the 5770 for another food 3 months or more, 68xx series to begin with will be just the £200+ cards, nothing lower.

Also NVIDIA's 460 768MB price is a temporary promo price so far and as such ATI don't feel the need to drop price and if our sales are to judge by the new 5770 price is spot on as our sales are mental selling 100+ units in the last 48hrs alone so ATI won't be budging on price as the units still fly out.

As to quietest model MSI Hawk or Sapphire Vapour-X is the one to get. :)

Then surely its even more reason to get the 460 now if you are looking now. Even with the prices as they were, for me the 768mb was still a better buy than the 5770 (they were already starting priced at the same level as the vapor-x 5770 really). They perform better and even the cheap ones with the reference cooler are quiet and great performers with good overclocking headroom.

Its down to how much you want to spend really (the OP) but while the 460s are low then for me its a no brainer. Priced how they were you are still getting good bang for your buck whether it £110-120 for the 5770 or £140-150 for the 460.

Wow, the MSI Hawk 5770 is down to £129. I suppose they werent selling very well.

But I would really think that the £117 Palit GTX 460 is currently unmissable at that price.

Ah yes those Palits, forgot about the 100 more that arrived today, can't see them lasting long though as at sub £120 for a 460 is just a steal. :)

It's Corsair HX450, but when 4870 is under load the PSU starts to buzz. Hopefully not a sign it's about to fail as the PSU should be capable as not using a high powered system apart from the switch to a 4870 512MB.

I've decided to stick with 4870 for now, and just wear headphones when gaming.

As per comments a GTX460 looks the best option, but would be overkill for myself system and may still cause PSU to buzz under load. And due to the great pricing of the GTX460, a 5770 just isn't a competative option.
