Hey everybody
This is my first post (so be gentle with me :) )...

After what seems like years I am finally getting round to buying myself some new kit (it seems my NF7S V2 with Barton 2500+ Mobile is no longer the dogs bollo**s!!). So here I am begging for advice....

It looks like I can afford an 8800GTS and I have been looking at the EVGA 640MB version with ACS3 in the hope that it will be reasonably quiet (I have delicate ears) can anyone advise if it is relatively quiet or whether there is better available?

All the 8800 series are built the exact same apart from some that are pre-overclocked. They all use the same coolers so all of them are very quiet even on load. The GPU fan will never reach 100% unless you set it to do so.

If you find the stock cooler too loud Im sure there are some 3rd party ones available.

Welcome to the forums btw.

Hey guys, thanks for the speedy replies!

I was under the impression that the EVGA ACS3 version had a non-standard cooling system that I was hoping would be quieter / better.

If that's not the case, there is no point in my going for it, does anyone have any suggestions for 8800 GTS's that are cheaper but no worse?

The model I'm talking about is the 640-P2-E827-AR

It does. I have the 320Mb version and it's a different cooler to the generic stock coolers.

It is meant to be quieter and although I haven't heard a stock one, I can vouch that it is pretty quite and bearly inaudible at 70% fan speed. However, I have mine overclocked like hell and hence the fan set to 100% all the time and then you can hear it but I wouldn't call it loud even then.

Not true. EVGA put their onw fans on the high end pre overclocked cards. They are the only ones to do so as far as I know.

Welcome to the forums popejpii.

Well it looks like you have the right card for the job so I'd like to ask a question. What system are you building to put this very fast card into? :D.

Yea i should have been more clear, when i said "...apart from some that arepre-overclocked." i generalised it too much. Forgot that EVGA put special coolers on some.;)

Yeah they have their own coolers on their SILENT range, don't know what difference it makes as they are all nigh on silent anyway. :D

Welcome to the forums btw popejpii :)

And I should read more carefully :o

Just read your first bit about they are all the same and then I hit reply.......premature I know but I suffer from it lately ;)

Hmmm, what to do, it would save me 20 squids or so to go XFX...

Has anyone had problems with either of these cards?
xfx 8800gts 640
EVGA 8800 gts 640 with ACS3

Hmmm, barely audible eh! I wonder if the 640 version is the same...

The stock coolers on these cards are fantastic !! I was shocked at how quiet it actually was,i was even tempted to send back my EK block that i had bought for my card:eek:

btw ,welcome to the forums mate;)

Rob

Ok, so the stock coolers are good enough, so I don't necessarily need this fancy EVGA cooler, but I shouldn't go for XFX because the support is bad....

Anyone got any other suggestions for a great 8800GTS 640?

P.S. Thanks to everybody for being so helpful to a noob!
