evening all, i'm after a very quiet cpu cooler for my HTPC

the CPU is an E2140 in an ABIT pre-overclocked motherboard bundle. Its overclocked to 2.66 GHz apparently.

Now, my case is an Origen AE H6 - Lovely case, but not the coolest i imagine. its not too small really for an HTPC, but i would say my max height for a CPU cooler is about 120mm... any more than that would be hitting the lid of the case.

i have an Arctic cooling freezer pro 7 in my desktop, which i'm quite happy with, although it can get a bit loud at times.

i was looking at the zalman CNPS8700-NT what are the general thoughts about that cooler?

I would like to make use of the 4-pin plug on the motherboard and NO LEDS or lights please.

Suggestions?

Thanks, that looks promising, it looks very similar to the freezer 7 pro, any idea how it compares with the AC?

thanks again

your right, they are way too big

so i'm looking for the quietest downward facing cooler i guess.... i'll check out the nt-06 lite

would i not need a fan with the SI-128SE too? that would make it too tall i think

i did think about the low profile arctic cooler, but as you say, its smaller than needed, which kind of means i'm making more of a compromise than i need to....

it looks like there are a few nice options from thermalright... its finding where to buy them that seems to be the problem

The SI-128SE is 91.5mm high, if i add a 25mm fan on top of that, its 116.5mm.... awfully close to the 120mm max.... a bit too close i think, there will be no room for the air to get into the top of the fan.

the thermalright AXP-140 would do the trick nicely, but finding one seems very tricky, plus its £45... that'll be £55 once ive added a nice fan to it. which is more that i wanted to spend really.

any other low profile - low noise solutions guys??

i think i might need to overclock my cpu to playback 1080p video, although i would need to test it out really.

I'm planning on using XBMC for windows as the media player, and at present, XBMC doesnt support hardware decoding (as far as i'm aware) so its all done via CPU, so it might get a bit toasty in there.

Mini ninja looks like a possibility, i'll need to check the mobo layout as you said. Its a micro board, so its a bit cramped

Out of stock here tho

thanks guys, i'll offer it up

The mini ninja has a 3 pin fan, so i assume it will just run at full speed all the time? is it just the 4 pin fans that change speed according to temp?

i could always just change the fan for a 4-pin version i guess?

3 pin fans can be temperature controlled too, it just depends on what you plug them into. Does your mb support fan/temp control ?

It does yeah, i think, but it has a 4-pin plug so i would assume it would just use the pwm method?

Maybe, maybe not. Try connecting a 3 pin and see what happens. My m3a79T has a 4 pin connector for the cpu fan but it works fine with, and still controls, 3 pin fans
