I'm thinking it's probably the Sapphire vapor-x 4890 that OC doesn't stock yet? is there a quiet nvidia?

I'm building a new PC and realised that noise really annoys me. I'm also wary of trying to fit a non-stock cooler in case I mess it up.

Hey mcast123,

You decide on a card yet? Im trying to decide on the exact same thing - quiet GPU for HTPC but to be used for games too.

Cheers.

NVidia tend to gear theirs towards less cooling and less noise, which means hotter cards
Where as ATI tend to go for better cooling, cooler cards, but at the expense of noisier cards

Sorry that's complete *****, Ati's do run as hot, if not hotter than nv's ( 4850/70 to 260's etc not considering older ranges ) and make a damn site more noise about the job of cooling whilst they're at it

No Swearing or disguised swearing please.

Sorry about that

but it does appear Nvidia has chosen to favor good acoustics over lower GPU temperatures, while AMD has taken a step in the opposite direction

Link from review of 275 vs 4890 incl roundup of other cards
before ranting off at me, try backing up your statements next time

For the record, i think he's right, the 4870 i had was a hot card, it was noisy too to keep it cool, my GTX275 runs both cool and quiet. (4870 kept switching between low and high fan speed, gtx275 sits with the fan at 30% at 40C).

My gtx 260 runs cool n quiet. My gainward 4870x2 runs hot and sounds like a leaf blower. When gaming can hear the fans speed up woooo scene with nice gfx wooooo and ive got a noisy h20 pc that the ati drowns out.Its the price you pay if you want speed i guess.
