A nasty looking minefield
Convinced myself not to use a genric 400w psu for my dads build.

Would like my dads pc to be totally quiet. It will need to power :

Pentium 4 3.4ghz @ stock (65nm) lga775
2gb ddr2 533
ASrock mobo
250gb sata2
Zalman 9700
18XDVDRW

Im still not sure on the grapjhics card.

Im looking to spend probably £100 ABSOLUTE tops on both.....

ps the mobo is pci xpress 16x

whats it likely to be used for ?

HIS ATI Radeon X1650 Pro ICEQ Turbo 256MB GDDR3 AVIVO HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (RX1650P-256ICEQT) £58.74

Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU - Black Nickel £41.11

If he doesn't game then you don't need to spend £100 for both:

OCUK 7300GT

&

FSP Bluestorm 2 400W or Antec Trio 430W

You can stretch to FSP BS 2 500W or the Enermax Noisetaker 535W if you want but not like he'll need this much power.

if its just net access etc :

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) £70.49

OcUK GeForce 7300 GT SILENT 256MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail
£27.01

doupt that kind of setup needs 520watt psu ...

indeed but its one of the quietest around, decently future proof and reliable quality.

less of a price could get a :

Zalman ZM500-HP Heatpipe Cooled 500W Modular PSU £65.79

The OP specified totally quiet, and Corsair/Seasonic are pretty much the quietest 'fan' cooled PSU's around.

The Antec Phantom is the quietest of them all, as its passive cooling under normal load, and then switches on a quiet fan if the PSU gets too heavily loaded, or run in too hot a room. But that comes at a big price.

I guess the Zalman heatpipe PSU's are pretty quiet too mind.

Silverstone ST30NF nightjar no fans no nonsense.

I also have the Corsair HX-620 which is pretty damn quiet. I went for HX-620 over the HX-520 as I wanted to guarantee quietness at relatively high load.

Okay, howabout I change for whats its needed?

How about old games @ 1024x768? or a 19" widescreen resolution.

The highest game I would play would be CS-S.

cheers.

I was thinking the zalman one (looks quiet) and a 7300GT.

Does the GT play games? (Well)

7300 not too good for gaming. TBH, unless your playing CSS on very low then its going to lag.

Although you really can't get much better at your budget. :) Not really required anyway.

Phantom 350w are absolutely amazing PSUs - completely silent.

I used one for about 18 months with my main rig and it was solid as a rock.

Try to pick one up second hand to get good value for money.

I would go with seasonic, I had an akasa powersupply but the seasonic is much quieter.

Was that the paxpower?

For the price it's as quiet I thought it would be (not whisper quiet as I hope the zalman will be), but still fairly quiet.

Fuuny coz i've ran HL2 on full settings 1024x768 on a 939 rig with 1gb of memory. Card in question was a 7300GT, though i'm sure the GT is more upto the task then a GS.

you can power all that easily on a Tagan TG330-U01 330W ATX Silent PSU. thats £35.24

steaming overclocked X2 pc with old hot X1800xt is drawing about 300w peak on the mains (got a meter), thats a lot less in dc side load.

then you got £65 for your choice of gfx

I would not recommend that PSU. I have one & although its served me well, its old. First off, its ATX v1.3 so no 24-pin & 8-pin power connectors. Then, might not be relevant to OP but, its got a single +12V rail @ 18amps & no 6-pin PCI-E power connectors - limiting GFX upgrade choice. Only 2-SATA power connectors. & finally, 330W is below the minimum 350W recommended these days.
