Quieting an OCuk prebuilt system

Hi, last year (about 9 months ago) I bought a relatively cheap OCuk system for my sister because i figured I couldn't build something for the same spec any cheaper (or even for the same money)

So anyway, the system is a small cube case, the Antec - Aria that includes a built in power supply with 120mm fan. Supposedly the case comes with a "Cyclone Blower" that fits into a PCI slot, or (apparently) underneath the hdd to add a bit more ventilation as aside from the PSU fan, there is no case fan. OCuk obviously felt no need to include this - but i'm not saying that was a poor descision, it's up to them at the end of the day. Just suffice to say, i don't have the cyclone.

Inside is an Abit - IG80 motherboard (socket 775) that is still on version 1 of bios (i'm probably overly nervous about updating bios's - if it was my box i wouldn't care, but.. well you know)

The processor calls itself an "Intel 3.00Ghz" which i presume means it's a celeron. (model 346 on that url). Oh, and it's not overclocked in any way.

The fan on the CPU is what I take to be the stock intel fan as it has an intel logo on the top. The heatsink appears to be aluminium. To be fair to this fan, it's not actually that small, but it's the reason for me writing this thread.
When the PC is on, (after about 30 minutes) it sounds like it's going to take off.
If left in the bios under Health whatever (that tells you the temperature) i find the it idles at 63º. Honestly i don't know a vast amount about intel processors, but I would imagine that this is rather warm?
The exhaust from the PSU fan is pretty cold, even though the CPU fan sounds like a very loud mosquito that's sat infront of a megaphone (seriously).

What I'm wondering really is whether anyone has this case and can recommend a better heatsink/fan whatever to hopefully lower the idle temperature of the processor so that the fan doesn't need to spin so fast all the damn time.
Alternatively if you know much about this motherboard maybe you can say "ah yes it's actually reporting the temperatures wrong, just update the bios" or something.

A bit of extra info; we're using the onboard sound and graphics - there's nothing in the pci slots, and there's one small sata hdd installed (about 120gb i believe).

And before anyone suggests it, no, a big copper zalman monstrosity probably won’t fit, or i'd have done it already.

Any advice/help whatever is much appreciated, simply because I can almost hear this thing through the walls.

Use some decent Thermal Compound (eg arctic Silver) and reseat the CPU cooler, as it doesn't seem to be doing it's job too well.

(If you don't have any thermal compund try re-seating the CPU cooler anyway as it doesn't sound like it's making proper contact)

ok, i'll try that when i get chance thankyou. i assume that it isn't meant to idle that hot?

There are a few things you can do with Antec Arias to quieten them. Firstly, get a Zalman CNPS7000 or CNPS8000 on the CPU. It will fit. I have a 7000 - there's plenty of reviews around that will tell you it's the best cooler for the Aria.

Secondly, you could replace the PSU fan, but obviously that involves voiding your warranty. You could also add a side blowhole - I added an 80mm fan to the left wide panel of mine. :)

Hi, thanks for the reply. I'm really pleased that you say the Zalman CNPS7000 actually fits, I think i'll nip down to OC and buy one on monday and fire it in. (do you have to remove the PSU?)

With regards to a new PSU fan or modding the case, i think for now i'll just try sorting the CPU fan out as, compared to that, there is no noise from the rest of the case. I realise that things are bound to heat up in there - it's tiny - but i just hope the zalman will help.

I've always used zalman's myself, and i've always been very pleased with them, but i would never have bought such a small case for myself as i simply wasn't sure about clearance issues with the dimensions of most zalman products.

Yep, the 7000 is fine, many people use it. The 8000 is new, and probably superior, and is the same size (almost) so you could be adventurous and see if it fits too.

You will definitely have to remove the PSU, and you may have to remove the mobo too. :( I can't remember the specifics of the LGA775 mounting mechanism as I use a 939 mobo.

i think i'll stick with the 7000 - at least i've used them before (not that there'll be much difference)
i'll let you konw how it goes thanks

bit of an update

i didn't manage to get to ocuk over the weekend, so i was going up this morning, but before i went i thought i'd measure inside the case.
according to zalman's compatability picture:
478_drim.gif

i need at least > 10mm to install a 7000B.. but the motherboard is about 5mm off the case :(
any suggestions/comments?

What other components are in the system? Usually the graphics card and motherboard southbridge chipset fan will be the loudest, with CPU and fan emitting coming second.

Open the case, power up the system and see what's making the most noise. Your motherboard chipset is passive, so check graphics card. It's hard to determine what is the noisiest component, as one fan could be faulty even though it's a quiet fan (say if the bearings have gone)

as i said in the original post;
using on board everything
no fans other than cpu and psu
it's the cpu fan making the noise.

(nice try though?)

I'd buy it and give it ago any way, if it won't quite fit you can always mod it a bit with a hack saw, still got to be better and quieter than the intel refference one, I've got a 478 refference cooler in my aria and it screams like a banshee

ok so i've been and purchased a CNPS7000B and guess what? it doesn't fit :]
not because it doesn't fit in the case, but because it doesn't fit on lame socket 775 without using a ZM-CS1 (that OCuk don't sell)
so i've ordered one from quietpc... maybe in 7 days if it arrives i'll have some photos of a much cooler, quieter aria.

lol that's what you get for being a sarcastic **** earlier on. :D Zalman website clearly lack 775 on supported CPU sockets.

heh yeah i was blinded by the "supports celeron d" so i just assumed "hell yeah i'll be able to fire it in one way or another" also the zalman info that comes with it is like yeha this supports 775 and then in smaller writing it says "if you buy something else"
heh
ah well, i've never bought from quietpc before, hopefully their "first class" delivery doesn't mean it's sent via pack mule like some websites do

Finished lol
Actually i finished like a month ago, but couldn't be bothered to put in the pictures. Plus I didn't wanna go downstairs to get the camera, so i took them with my phone...
Anyway... here's a couple of photos...
In the end there was 2mm clearance (roughly lol) between the fan and the case and about 10mm up to the PSU...
The result is an Antec Aria that doesn't sound like it's gonna take off xD

Totally dwarfing the mainboard really. Very top of the image you can see the aluminium waste-of-space stock-fan that is now in the bin.

Now idles around 48 degrees as opposed to 63 that it was before :]
(which considering the current weather conditions isn't bad:))

Thanks to everyone for your advice/etc ...
