I was thinking of a bit of an upgrade to my PC, spec of which is in my sig.
To be honest, I play CSS about 90% of the time, and the odd random games dropped in to fill in the last 10%.
I was thinking of moving to SLI, buying a Asus A8N-SLi and maybe a 7950 512mb to go with it. Total cost maybe £280-ish. Bearing in mind what I play, does this seem like a complete waste of time, or will I get some real improvement? I know Ive posted about a couple of things to do with this already, but its crunch time now, do I do it or not, and I could really do with some opinions :)
Thanks folks !

Considering you spend most of the time playing CS:S your current system is more than up to the job (assuming you game at no more than 1600x1200).

I wouldn't bother spending anything tbh and certainly wouldn't buy a 7950 512mb. There are better cads avaiable for less. (7900GTO, X1900XT, X1800XT etc).

sit tight for a few months until

a) dx10 is established
b) quad core cpus are released
c) next gen games for latest gfx cards are out...

Only a few months now :)

Yea stay with your own system for a while longer. I just upgraded to a E6300 and a new mobo but that was because I was stuck in a dell box until I did. Now I can upgrade everything else nice and a slowly :)

I appreciate the advice lads. I still have AGP at the moment, and wondered really wether the new card would raise the low points of fps in css. Also if I could raise everything to maximum. Most things are on max already, but you know how it is ... :D
On a side note, the old parts would not be wasted, as I can upgrade my sons PC with them at the same time.
I cap the fps in css at 200, but most of the time it runs between 80 and 130 which is of course totally acceptable, however occasionally (say in very "busy" maps like the new Militia and Inferno) it can dip down towards 50 , particularly on servers with lots of people on.
I cant seem to see a 7900GTO, do I assume you mean a 7900GT overclocked, like BFG make or similar? Im really not a fan of ATI cards, so if I did buy one it would definately by NVidia.

The 7900GTO is the following:

OcUK MSI GeForce 7900 GTO SILENT 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-041-OK)

A 256-bit memory interface and fast GDDR3 memory enable blazing graphics performance with the quality set to max so you don’t have to choose between frame rates and image quality. Need a break from gaming? The GeForce 7900 GPU also delivers smooth, high-definition video playback and crisp picture quality thanks to its advanced NVIDIA® PureVideo™ technology. If you are searching for an extreme HD gaming and video experience on the PC, look no further than a Geforce 7900 GPU.

This card is more or less identical to any other 7900 GTX on the market accept for two differences. The first is its memory is clocked slower and secondly look at the price. Performance wise these cards are only approx 3-5% slower than a 7900 GTX with full speed memory, but you can easily overclock these cards as well. So when you consider the price these are an amazing deal. Be quick! Stock will soon be gone!
