need base unit for £450 inc win XP pro oem
but don't need fancy graphics, just a nice fast system with lots of storage etc

was thinking of maybe a X2 3800 if it can be squesed on, not sure if 2gig of ram is required but if you CAN fit it do!

not sure if its better to go AMD or Intel with this, its going to run folding but thats not its primery function

onboard graphics would be fine etc

Hows this? tiny bit over budget but you get your dual core, a good board (overclock it, seriously these chips are great:p), 1gb of ram, nice case/psu, onboard GMA graphics and 200gb of storage.

For this kind of money, with windows i seriously doubt you will get a 3800 X2 into the budget without sacrificing everything else.

could do with a DVD RW too :(

maybe forgo the dual core to get the price down a bit?

The dual core is only £93 anyway, I guess you could go single core AMD and then save a bit of money on the motherboard but it wouldnt save enough for 2gb of ram

Venice isn't a BAD CPU.. It's clockable to at least 2.5ghz and still performs respectably well.

I meant it was kinda slow, not dual core etc. and a 25% (what my 3200+ has ;) check my sig) isnt that great considering most of the dual core P4's will OC by 50% on air at near stock voltage
