What is a normal temp for a QX6700 CPU that isn't clocked.

I've got mine running in an EVGA 680i SLI S1 board with a Noctua NH-U12F cooler and Arctic-Cooling MX-2 compound.

Core Temp shows between 45 and 50 for the cores when idle but never goes above 70 when under load (Prime 95). Am I right in thinking the idle temps are too high? The machine is stable.

How did you screw the base down because it might not be flush with the cpu.

It's best to screw down either side a small amount so it sits nice and flush, short of that it may be time to lap the cpu, would'nt bother doing the noctua as these are normally spot on.

To answer what I can now...

Case is a Silverstone TJ07, so the mother board sits towards the top. The two 92mm rear fans pull air into the case (directly into the cooler) while two 120mm fans extract air out of the roof. I have the Noctua positioned so it's airflow is pushing up towards the top of the case currently, although I'm starting to consider rotating it through 90 degrees to keep with the airflow from the two rear fans. Just so long as I can do this without having to take the board out again!

I did screw one side of the cooler down a little and then the other and so on, so it should be sitting square. I used a small blob of compound in the center of the cpu and sat the cooler onto that to spread.

Link to a screeny I posted on the EVGA forums shows CPU-Z.

yeah its a B3, they do run hot. I think you should try re-seating the cooler, how much paste did you use ?

Defiantly hot mine runs at the temps you have when its clocked around the 3.5GHz mark however mine is lapped and using a Thermalright Ultra-120, try what has being suggested above reseat the cooler :)

I can see an install instruction download, but it just says to do what I'm doing. Nothing different for dual or quad cores...

Edit - This info is on the arctic silver web site.
