How would this CPU hold up against the current Wolfdales, and lower end yorkfields ? say E8400/E8500 and Q9300/Q9400 ?

Still fairly well, depends what you're paying for it.

Better off getting a Q6600 if you're looking around that area.

not necessarily, QX6700 were often the B3 core which clock a LOT worse than Q6600s so they didn't hold their value at all well.

Find out what revision it is, if its G0 (not sure if any of them were?) then buy it as it'll probably be a monster cpu, if not and its a B3 save some money and get a Q6600/E8xxx
