A mate has a pre built overclocked machine (not from here...silly boy).

Its got a QX6850 running at 3.3GHz and speedfan is showing the vcore as 1.47v.....is that an acceptable voltage for these chips?

His temps are through the roof (75-80 idle and 90-96 load) and its restarted a couple of times during games and also slows down from time to time (90 fps to 30 fps in cod4) so its pretty safe to say he has a heat poblem :)

Its water cooled and obviously something is seriously wrong apart from voltage alone but its a starting point.

Not 100% sure on the rest of the spec but its an alienware tri-sli machine. The cards are also running hot... 90c for 2 of them and 109c for top one:eek: but thats for another section.

Not been inside it yet as he only got it the other night and doesnt really understand there is a problem with it yet.

With temps like that on a water cooled cpu i am guessing its either poor contact after a rough ride during transit or that the pump isnt running properly.

Way outa my league here spec wise (see sig :)) so lookin for some advice from those more qualified :)

Sounds like something is going crazy wrong if that is indeed a water setup. As far as I know 1.5V is the max to put into most chips if you want them to last.

I can get 3.3 on stock volts. There is no way that he needs 1.47 for 3.3. for referance im putting 1.48 something or other to get the 3.7Ghz with some boosts on the NB. Temp wise im getting arround 45~48 Idle and up to 70 load (On Air). 90~96 is dangerous for this chip as it is recommended by intel not to go over 65, however 70 will be fine. Some thing is definitly up with the cooling. If i was your mate, i would sort it sharpish otherwise he is going to have a very expensive lump of junk :p
