First power-on tonight...

All lights ok, fans spinning. Then they go faster, no video !. Pulled everything unnecessary, still no go. ASUS P5W64 WS Pro, bios 0802 as recco by ASUS for this chip.

All I can think is that the 'config by spd' was off for the ram. I'll try again asap.....<sigh>. At least the PC is working again with my ol' 670 P4, when I re-inserted the old one it detected a 'new cpu' !!.

Any other idea's guys ???

Regards

Sorted <phew>....could have died when it refused to boot.

Loading bios defaults before putting in the 'beast' had no effect. As a last resort I took out the cmos battery and shorted its jumper for 20secs. Rebooted to see the bios screen for the first time !.

Observations so far ?. Appears to run cooler than my 3.8GHz P4 670 !!!. Zalman CPNS 9700-NT feels cool to the touch and the fan is running slowly (yes speedstep is enabled and drops the processor to 2GHz most of the time). What suprised me though was that the northbridge seems to be running cooler ! (i975x), I've always had a fan on that too, I've changed nothing but the processor (my old one also had speedstep running). FSB up to 1333 from the old 800 ??, so where's the Northbridge heat then ?.

Benchmarks ?. My system is no way optimised (struggling with memory figures at the mo) yet 3D Mark 2006 had doubled from 6623 to 12507 !.

I'm happy.....still got to get my head round the setup, I feel it's not right yet.

Regards
