Hi all,

I can get an Intel QX6850 for roughly £400 brand new all sealed. What do people think about this processor in terms of how long will it last, speed, overal performance, comparison with new Penryn's etc...?

Thanks,

RoEy

Don't bother. The Q6600 G0's get around the same speed and with the new quads only weeks away I would hangfire and get one of them if you want to spend £400 on a cpu!

Will the Penryn's give me better performance out the box compared to a QX6850 then, if I'm willing to spend roughly £400?

Yes, even though it will have a slightly lower clockspeed.

QX6850 = 3ghz Kentsfield

Q9550 = 2.83ghz Yorkfield

Don't be fooled by the clockspeed. Out of the box the 9550 will out perform the 6850. The tricky part is how will they overclock? No one can tell you this really. You will be lucky to get 4ghz from the 6850. The 9550, while overlcoking well and running much cooler will be slightly hampered by a locked multi so you will need a good motherboard capable of decent FSB's to get the most out of it.

If you aint overclocking (or even if you are!) I would wait for the 9550 tbh.

So the Q9550 will be better than the QX6850 but by how much? Do we know when they'll be out?

No way to tell yet. Release wise the place where I got the prices from has an due date of the CPUs on 17/3/2008

There's Q9650 at 3Ghz which is being released Q3 08 aswell
