QX960 Stock Cooler

You need to put the ram in before the CPU on the Maximus Extreme, plus it covers the waterblock, so no watercooling it.

Thats a real beast of a stock cooler, is it only the QX9650 that gets a decent cooler? What do the less ridiculously priced CPUs in the range get?

The cooler on the QX9650 whilst looking pretty was an absolute pig to install on my Gigabyte X38T-DQ6 motherboard due to the idiots at gigabyte sticking the cpu so close to the RAM slots that any half sized cpu cooler would cover up half the slots.

With corsair dominator RAM and their heatsinks, the cooler covered up the first 2 Dimm Slots meaning my nice and expensive 4GB of DDR3 RAM could not be installed. Furthermore it was so wide that it meant that I could also not install my independently water cooled graphics card radiator into the 120mm slot on my Antec 900 case (which i was told would fit no problem) because the QX9650 cooler filled up that area. Meaning I had to lose three 5.25 bays at the front of my case to install my radiator back to front so that my pc now looks like it has a very large nose!.

Despite advice from gigabyte tech support on a suitable replacement cooler, which i purchased and that then did not fix the problem, I was so angry that I went out and bought 3 cpu coolers to be sure that I could get at least one that worked, that were rated highly on frostytech.com and from rough measurements that I guessed would fit.

Eventually settled on watercooling the whole system to ensure I never have this sort of problem again!

As you can see I am still angry about this delightful looking but pain in the ass cooler through no fault of its own.

It is pretty wide so definetly measure up if your ram sits close to the cpu or you have high heatsinks nearby or if you have rear exhaust fans near to the edge of the motherboard.
