im about to replace my gtx295 for a 5870 and a friend of mine has offered to swap his QX9650 with me for my old card

would i get better performance with a QX9650 than i do with my E8600? i wouldnt be overclocking as i like to run things at stock speeds ;)

thanks :) just a quick question, if for some reason he doesnt have the cooler for it anymore would i be able to use the one that came with my e8600?

The E8600 will be the faster chip in all but apps that can make use of the extra cores. And depending on the QX's revision the Wolfdale may overclock significantly more.

thanks guys, ill go for it then and if i find im not getting what i expected in games then i can always stick the 8600 back in and sell the QX9650 :)

Most cpu's have a locked multiplier, the Q9650 has a multiplier of 9 which can not be increased, so when overclocking you need to increase the FSB.
The QX has a unlocked multiplier so you can increase this to overclock the cpu without touhing the FSB or worry about memory speeds :)

ahh ok :) sound like it would be perfect for me if i ever wanted to try and overclock it, less settings to change = less things for me to mess up

thanks for the info ;)

am i right in thinking it would be a bad idea to try and overclock it with a stock cooler? :p

Yes. Stock coolers arnt the greatest. But overclocking the qx9650 by even a small amount would be relatively easy just by moving the multiplier up a notch so long as your motherboard has some decent options in the bios to allow you to do it. I had a qx6700 and it was quite easy to clock just by moving the multi.

thanks guys :) i have a P5Q Deluxe and from what i have been reading its supposed to be pretty decent for overclocking so i might give it a go, it would be nice if i could bring it up to 3.3 to match my e8600

i could buy qx9650 for 350 £ 6 moths ago used so i would think about it even q9650 are better then qx9650 as they have better stepping, but still its great cpu, should do 4 ghz easily.

edit: for 3.3 ghz just increase fsb/ or multi you dont need to mess around with volts till u reach 3.6 or 3.7
