sorry if this is a stupid question my friend want's to give me a qx9770 looking at the supported cpu's for my board its states Since BIOS Version > F3 (by overclocking) just not sure what that means ? ;)

GA-EP35-DS3P
Core™ 2 Extreme QX97703 F3
Since BIOS Version > F3 (by overclocking)

I would expect it means you will need to manually increase the FSB for it to run at stock?

You have a very generous friend!!!

I'm sure it will work fine :)

just update to the latest BIOS version and give it a whirl!

It's because the standard FSB used by the chip is 400MHz and the chipset on the board is only designed for 333MHz.

It shouldn't be a problem getting to 400 MHz.

yeah ok makes sense ;) , did tell him it's worth a few hundred , all I did was to look after his cat for a week

ok thanks guys ;) most helpful

I suspect you will see a big improvement in games that scale to more cores.

Overclock the cpu to 3.6GHz + and your 5870 will be purring at you like the cat was!

;)
