Hiya all,
I have the chance to get hold of the cpu named above for £150 notes and im not to fussy about re building my whole system to go i7 so im going to stick with S775 for now. Forget my sig as that is now my old rig, well my lasses pc. Ive got a 790i mobo and 1600mhz DDR3 ram. My questions are I know the qx is allready 3.2 but will it clock much higher? Also whats the best oc somebody has had out of one of these chips? Im going to be using a H50 as the cooler so temps I dont see being a massive problem. Any answers / ideas out there guys??

Nice, chip, even nicer price ;)

Friend of mine had one of these at 4ghz briefly but that needed like 1.45v, think he settled on 3.8ghz at 1.38 or similar.

Urgh thats disapointing, I thought I would be a shoe in for at least 4ghz. My old Q9550 hit 3.7 at 1.36v. I might just stick with my q9550!!

Yea I was just starting come round to that thinking myself. My Q9550 is E0 stepping and gets to 3.7 even on the dreaded 780i board so im thinking I have a good chip so just going to slap that in my new set up and see how I go. I dont have the cash unfortunately for a new i7 rig cos of baby on the way so was just trying to get the best of both worlds. Never mind my pc will do me for a good couple of years now considering what I use it for!! Might invest the processor money into a SSD!!

I'd take it for that price, but be aware that your motherboard is likely to give you problems.

One significant advantage over the q9550 is that a poor clocking motherboard tends to limit fsb as much as anything else, so an unlocked multiplier can be very useful indeed.

How do you mean. My motherboard does quite handsomely with my Q9550 I think! I was expecting better from the 790i chipset is that not the case?? My current 780i settings are 437 x 8.5 to get 3.7ghz

437 is low for a fsb limit. The gigabyte P45 board has been run stable at close to 500fsb, my P45 Asus board gave up at 472.

Ah right. I see. I was chuffed to get what I have got to be honest becasue I heard these boards wernt the best to clock 45nm chips, but then again I was well happy with 3.7! I havnt tried to go any higher since I just stuck at what was stable and gave good everyday performance without any lockups. Christ if I could get 470 x 8.5 I would be running at nearly 4ghz!!

should be easily overclockable even on 780i motherboard as qx9770 has unlocked multiplier. try to go with 10x and u will only need 400fsb to clock it to 4ghz

I dont have that board anymore my lass has it. I have a 790i one now. I was going to get the 9770 but i think im gonna pass it up just use my old 9550 and get my lass a dual core she only uses it for the net and word processing anyway. Then I will just try and clock the 9550 up to 4ghz on the 790i.

Q9550 E0 would be the best bet IMO - I got mine to 3.825gig easy with reasonable voltage on an EVGA 750i F.T.W and it will do 4+gig but needs a big voltage push for every extra 200MHz so not worth it in the bigger scheme of things. On the right board you should manage atleast 4gig with sensible voltages and upto 4.5gig if your prepared to push it a little.

Cheers Rroff. My Q9550 is E0 so im just going to try and get as close to 4ghz as possible. Im not interested in massively increasing voltages to get to 4.5ghz I dont see the point. Acidity if your serious drop me a mail in trust my friend and I will see if I can sort it out for you.
