hello all.
Just signed up and this is my first post.
Im still rocking a quad core, currently the original a q9400 my base unit came with. And am wanting to upgrade to the best my socket 775 can be before venturing into massive overhauls.
So does anyone know where I could get a qx9770 from, other than ebay!?
There never seems to be many on there, and they're alway dodgy looking, from hong kong or something.
Does anyone have one for same by any chance, if they have recently upgraded to i7 or anything!?
cheers all

I have my Q9400 clocked to 3.6 on 1.25v, runs everything I need it too with ease.

I'm waiting to see how the Ivy Bridge and Bulldozer fare against the SB chips before I upgrade.

I'd stick the the chip you have, and Oc it a little bit, it'll last till the Ivy Bridge stuff comes in :)

get q9650 instead that clock decently with good cooler you can get them to 4.5 ghz , or overclock your current chip , if you didnt already

The QX9770 might seem the fastest on paper but it's a C1 stepping at best (some C0's out there too) and these don't overclock as well as E0 stepping chips. For an E0 chip you need to get a Q9650 (guaranteed E0) or Q9550 (need to check Spec code), Q9550s (guaranteed E0), Q9450s (guaranteed E0).

....unfortunately that's only part of the truth. To achieve success (or rather have as best a chance at it) then you also need a good motherboard (prefrebly with vdroop control), RAM and cooler. Some could argue a hefty PSU is also the norm but perhaps you also have one that's "capable". If not then I dare say you'll find yourself on a spending spree just to overclock to 4GHz and over. That's why if you plan to overclock you should always build your system DIY style, no PC OEM out there is going to do a better job at it, even if they care, which they don't (except select Alienware. VoodooPC lines etc.).

Cheers for all the feedback. Maybe I should be looking for a 9650 then?
I have a asrock board, not sure on model righ now as not at home, but it's fairly decent and is running 2 nvidia 9800gx2s in sli. 8gb of corsair xms2 ram. A corsair h70 cpu water cooling block. And has a 800w black edition psu. I haven't over clocked my current chip, not entirely sure how to to be honest. Do you need a certain program? But you know what it's like, I just want the best before I even need to think about different chips and motherboards. So people think I should go for a 9650? eBay the best? Anyone have one for sale on here? Are they better than the 9770?

also randomly whilst on the subject of upgrading processors, im after a pentium 4 3.4 extreme edition, socket 478 if anyone had one sat around gathering dust, as they're so old these days. my old machine which we use as a music machine in the living room is getting jealous and wants some upgrade love too, if it was possible. And back in the day i always wanted one, but they were so expensive, but now im sure they must be fairly cheap, but seem hard to find!?

what sort of figures can you get out of overclocking a qx9650 or a qx9770!?

On air 3.6-4.0GHz. Anything higher will require ample voltage thus produce further heat.

They're both C0/C1 stepping, you want to go for an E0 stepping instead. These run cooler, use a little less power and overclock higher (though heat is also an issue above 4GHz, especially with a low VID* chip).

*VID = Voltage ID

I wouldn't go wasting money on a dead socket to be honest. Top end 775 chips are far too expensive now. Overclock your current chip and save the money towards a full upgrade.

Read up about overclocking your current cpu. Spending £150+ on a new chip that performs 10% better that your current one and is a dead socket is a waste of money.

If im honest save your cash. Dont buy a QX chip as the only real benefit is the unlocked multiplier making overclocking a little easier. I run in my main rig a q9650 at 4.0ghz stable and in my htpc I have a q8400 at 3.0ghz stable. The latter is a small overclock but considering its in a very small case im more than happy with the speed to temperature performance, and ultimately for music, blu ray, family pics and the odd blast on WOW its fine.

My advice is to clock the chip you already have, its takes a little patience to achieve the max overclock you can achieve but in the end its worthwhile and gives good satisfaction.

SKT 775 is old tech now, still performs very well and will do for a good while longer yet but it dosnt really justify spending big bucks on when the much faster newer stuff is out.
