Hi guys, ive got the option to buy a QX9775 for 200 pounds. At the moment im running a E6600 at 3.5GHz and i thought i can either buy a new core i7 950, mobo and memory and spend 550 pounds, or i could just changed the processor in my current setup and save 350. I dont really use it for gaming and i really hate upgrading to a new system and never using the old one.

Reckon i should just get the qx9775? Its not that far behind the i7s is it? I reckon i should be able to overclock it beyond 4GHz.

what pasty said

it belongs on the intel skulltral platform, which consists of a dual socket motherboard (of which only one design has been made ... by intel).

The board is hugely expensive, and you'd have to source another QX9775 for it to work.

I think the best of the best for skt 775 is the qx9770.

No. If you are wanting to stop with the majority of your system ie motherboard and ram etc go for either a Q9550 or the cheaper Q6600. Ive had both of those chips and im now on a Q9650 running at 4.0 ghz under water and if im honest there is not a lot of difference between my current cpu and my old q9550 at 3.8. The only benefit I can see of the qx9770 is the unlocked multi that it has. Other than that if im not mistaken it runs hotter than the e0 9550 and 9650's

From what i can tell 'froogling' and 'popular auction site'-ing, the Q9550 is around the 200 pound mark anyway and the Q9770 a little bit more so i may as well get the Q9770?

and the rest of the q9xxx are 1333mhz :p

doesnt matter tbh. What does matter is that the cpu you are looking at is on the supported list on your manufacturers website. If its supported, then the fsb should easily be overclocked to run at 1333mhz, or a more recent bios update might give you 1333mhz native support anyways.

what is the motherboard in question?

i7 950 is at 211 pounds?
or happens every two weeks
sell the old stuff as a bundle will prob make some moonies out of it still?

or as you said if you cant be bovv upgrading everything listen to the guy above :-D

Q9550 are going for that much now!! Blimey. I might get some good cash for my Q9650 then lol. I would still go for the Q9550 over the QX9770 as its E0 stepping so will run cooler overall and is something like 0.17ghz slower at stock speeds and like you said its cheaper.

I wanted a QX9770 a while ago and was put of buy the price and the fact that you can get a Normal Q9550 / Q9650 clocked up to similiar speed as the QX on a decent board.

How would you rank the best 775 CPUs based on performance, taking into account i can overclock and have the equipment to do so....

ie ignore the cost

Well I would say the Q9650 being the best quad core. Forget the QX variant for the fact of price and they run hotter which can limit your clock dependant on cooling.

I would say a Q9650 like mine. You wont go far wrong with a good E0 stepping one. Mine runs at 4.0ghz and it might do more. I havnt tried any higher if im honest. Ive just got a happy medium now with cracking temperatures and a good stable speed at a 25% overclock

Well ive got a tuniq tower, a 160mm fan i can put on the side of the tuniq tower and then ive got 2x 220mm fans in my case (along with the usual smaller ones). So i'd like to think i could get to 4GHz! lol

On a sidenote, memory question, ive got some Kingston HyperX which says it can run at PC8500 (1066MHz).... in my Asus P5W DH Deluxe i have the FSB running at 380 to 390 (on my E6600) and my memory MHz in the BIOS says 770 (i usually cant go higher than this?).

Does this mean its actually running at 770 x 2.... faster than the 1066? Before you ask, ive got no cpu/memory ratio settings on my mobo.
