Playing my 60gb PS3 this morning as I was in the mood for a bit of GT5, and well, it stuck during the loading screen, rebooted it, to find it is not reading BD-Roms.

Tried the check HDD for errors. One was found and repaired, also tried the restore system thingy, to no avail...

Boooo :(

What to do now?!

Such a crap start to 2012.

Get it fixed... Loads of places online will fix for set fee.

Wasn't/Isn't/still is the 60gb the best one to have. For upscaling dvd's or are the latest ones good now

Going to cost atleast £80-90 to repair so it seems? Fair wedge for it to only happen over and over.

How are the slim's holding up?

My 40Gb has died aswell, got the YLOD. However, I've noticed this "Swap Out" service on eBay. Seems you buy the service, courier delivers a replacement PS3 (same model, i.e. 2xUSB or 4xUSB) and you give him your broken one.

Costs £77.50 and seems like a good service. Dunno if anyone has had experience with something similar or it would be of interest? They are reconditioned ones though, so could just be self-repairs.

wow OcUK PS3's are not having a good start to the year add me to the list, just got a freeze and the flashing red light while playing Battlefield 3 :(

its been kicking into loud fan mode after a short period of play for a month or so now so i have been worried but its now gone

Ylod is pretty easy repair,I fixed mine myself with heatgun method, its a 60bg model, apparently its due to Sony using non lead solder

My slim died after Christmas :(

Tried all the different things Sony suggested and it wouldn't even read DVDs in the end.

At the time I had a 40gb for around 10 months? and then all of a sudden that yellow light of death happened... was like :S? Then I was going to send back to Sony but I just took it back to gamestation and they gave me another one but the 80gb one as a replacement so was pretty chuffed with that, no problems at all so the 80gb one still going strong over a year later lol touch wood.

sounds like your blu ray drive has died OP, you can pick up another one off ebay, and fix it yourself using the many guides on internet and youtube, etc.

or sony will repair it for you at 5 times the price.

i would have a go at repairing myself personally if it was me, not that hard to do, just like swapping a drive on a pc i would imagine.

Its a little more involved then just swapping the drive. pricies depend on how far you go into repairing the drive. Taking whole mechanism apart and just replacing the laser is cheapest option at around £30, but replacing the whole mechanism (including new laser) is only around 20 quid more.

You have to at least remove the drive and take of its circuit board and put it back onto the new mechanism. Theres no reason it shouldnt last for rest of the consoles life after this.

Whacked it on eBay, had the usual army of muppets hoping to bag it for a 5er or a silly low price, like eyaaaa mayte, al give yer twenny quid cos my mate Dave reckons that's all it's worth :x

I'm looking to rake in atleast £80 for it. What's my chances? Saw a 80gb sell for £73 yest.

If anyones having disk read errors i suggest, before spending any cash to have it repaired, try cleaning the laser yourself.

My PS3 stopped reading disks last year, followed a youtube guide to dismantle it (not too difficult) used some cotton budds and some Artic Cleaner!! on the laser lense. Clearly worked as could see some yellowish/browny dirt on the cotton bud. Re assembled by reversing video on youtubes!

One year later and PS3 still going strong. Took about an 1-2hrs in total.

tried cash converters lol? i took my 60gb model in there they offered me £80 but i didnt take up the offer

i'd be interested in the send it in service from ebay. my BIL has a dead laser unit.

that said, i fixed loads and there not hard to do but i must say, the lasers don;t seem to last long.

i bit the bullet and just replaced mine with a 160gb slim, took me a few hours to use the data transfer utility correctly but i got there in the end and now i can confidently play without the worry or it dying again

now i had the fat in the bedroom as a media centre but the fan noise is a bit irritating so im not sure wether to take it to cash converters / CEX and get what i can for it as it runs media and LBP2 fine but dies after a couple of hours on battlefield 3

knowing my luck if i try the trade it will die as soon as they try to run anything

This happend 6 months ago whilst playing GT5 with the same error on the same spec PS3 as you.

I did a bit of digging online and decided it was the laser that was broken (since it wouldn't read the disc) so I checked ebay and bought one for about £40.

Took about 20mins to replace and the console has been working perfectly since.
