Hi all.
Looking at pulling the trigger on an upgrade in the next couple of days.
i5 4670k
Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z87 Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard
Avexir Venom Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C9 2133MHz

Now on the gpu front I was set on a something like this.
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 SC ACX Dual Bios 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express
But know that for £50 more I could possibly have a 290 it's pretty tempting.

Are there any of the 290's left that flash to the X, or have I missed that boat?
Concern's I have ATM are black screen issue's and possible problems with running a Gigabyte motherboard.

Either card will be running a EK universal block with ram sinks and loads of airflow (HAF X case).
Any thoughts guys'n'girls.

Looking about, it seems that board and 290's hate each other. Several people having issues with a 290. It could just be bad luck though.

It's a big concern that.
Doing a green and black build and that motherboard fits the bill well.
I guess I could switch to a black and red build and go MSI, just means some more soldering swapping out the green leds I have just fitted. HMMMM.

I was looking forward to flashing a 290 to a 290x to.

If it was me I'd be more worried about the 290 compatibility with your chosen motherboard, the 290is faster than a 770 as is without worrying about flashing.

Don't be worrying about if it flashes to a 290x or not, its not that much of a difference really.

If I was you, Id go for the 290 over a 770 (easy choice). Even with all the potential issues.

From what I am seeing on here there are a lot of potential issues.

I believe the only reason the 290 won't run on the Gigabyte sniper board is due to it having green on there. LOL.
A 290 is my card of choice, I think the heat issues I can avoid as it will be going onto water.
Problem is if I get one stick the block on it and it dies I then have some RMA issue's.
I guess run it on air for a while and make sure it's ok?

Buy a sapphire/msi 290 reference board from ocuk and you can remove the cooler without voiding the warranty.

I have probably asked this somewhere else, but really? If so, that gives me piece of mind for a while. Would this just be for the first year?

As long as you don't damage the card doing it then you'll be ok for the full duration of the warranty. :)

That's good to know.
MSI 290 in my basket, big decision now is motherboard.
It doesn't look good for the sniper, sound issues and 290 issues.
Not doing my colour choice any favours.
Looks like I will have to do a black / red build.
Either the MSI gamer or spend the extra and get the Asus maximus.
Any thoughts?

Is the compatibility issue only with the sniper board or gigabyte mobos on general as I have a Z87X-UD3H and I'm considering the 290 ?
