Going to upgrade my computer. Looking for advice on my gpu.

Mobo will be Intel Z97, and CPU will be i7 4790K. 16GB g.skill mem

Currently looking at either a new R390 8GB or a GTX970 4GB, as both run around the same price.

Only occasionally play games.. TBH and only at 1920x1200 but with all the eye candy on. GTAV amoung other games.

What am i better going with ? the 8gb ATI or the 4GB nVidia? given everything else is Intel ?

If you absolutely have to buy new then you can grab the 390 (unless you have a clear preference for nvidia). TBH, both will be fine at your res. Don't worry about vram, both cards are too weak to use even 4gb properly. When it becomes a problem you'll be swapping cards anyway.

If you can go the second-hand route then I'd pick a used 970/290x over a 390 any day. These cards won't have a tremendously long lifetime so you might as well save some money.

just lol you come up with some real gems:D

Op i had this problem yesterday i went 390:)

Care to prove me wrong then instead of posting random wise-assery? Because if you really thought that was funny it either means you're pretty dim or just uneducated on the matter.

Try maxing the Witcher 3 at 1080p on either and the come back and tell me which you first ran out of, vram or GPU power? Were you happy with the framerate? You can do the same with GTA 5 or countless other titles. Then go back and have a laugh at me.

Indeed. The 390 seems to wind some people up.:D

Had this dilemma a few weeks back. I usually buy Nvidia but thought that I would give the 390 a chance. Glad I did.:)

No, it's people with no common sense that wind others up. 390 is a decent card and I'd probably pick it over the 970 if I was buying new but thinking it's immensely powerful and future-proof because of its vram, when in fact it already struggles in some games, is just plain daft.

Well, at least I provided a laugh and made you feel "superior". Cheers.

Well, it's funny you're suddenly assuming the "I'm more mature than you" stance after taking the mick out of what I said instead of posting something useful:rolleyes:.

I was just trying to help and my argument is perfectly valid. Both the 970 and 390 are too weak to use more than 4gb at 1080p on their own and you can easily test it. You will constantly run out of grunt and drop below 40fps in games like FC4 if you push the settings and vram won't be to blame. Is it that hard to grasp? If yes, then I apologise and am very glad to have entertained you with my illogical reasoning.

Stick 20GB of Vram on all Mid-range Gpu's.**** the fact you lack the grunt to actually utilize it.

What does that matter.

:o :p

Don't bother, some people are a bit too thick to grasp a simple concept.

A Titan X runs out of grunt at 4k before using up a half of it's memory so it's perfectly logical to assume a 390 is going to tap into significantly more than 4gb at 1080p;p

Didn't mean to belittle you or anything so I apologise if I came across as a bit rude.

I haven't posted any unfounded cobblers but some pretty reasonable observations that would tell the OP what he can expect from either card so I just didn't get why I was being laughed at. Cheers and no hard feelings I hope;)
