R600 -> 250W

From the Inq (so take it with a pinch of salt):

"We can now confirm that the new ATI card will consume around 250W. The currently fastest ATI, R580+ or Radeon X1950 XTX consumes up to 125W i a worst case scenario and heavy 3D while you can suck up 145W out with the dual chip X7950 GX2 card."

Thats a lot of juice :eek:

*sniff* *sniff* ... i smell something.

lol.

Nothing against you Dave, but I consider that site more along the lines of a joke book than a newspaper most of the time.

As far as I'm aware G80 and R600 are supposed to use less power than current generation cards too. I don't have a link but I think that was an ATI quote on DailyTech yonks ago.

I know the Inq are pretty shoddy, but they certainly seem convinced.

I can't really see 250W output myself, thats just too much heat, without a direct exhaust thats going to cause a lot of heat to be dumped into the case. Interesting if there is some truth to it though, running a PC is going to get really expensive :(

when we start edging towards a 1Kw psu as standard, im going to sell up and go to a console. im not paying for a pc and paying as much as i would for a storage heater to keep the damn thing running.

Whilst this story doesn't seem to be the most credible, I've actually found a lot of the info on the Inq to not be that far off. Anyhow, it's fun reading stuff and trying to work out how likely it is to be true :p

Well they change their stories so much theyre bound to get close to some kind of fact eventually. They say one thing one day and totally contradict it soon after.

There's talk of an external power supply needed for the G80, maybe this is the same?

Ah so thats where the 3dfx technology went ;)

I seem to remember reading an article a while back that touched upon the subject of power consumption and it stated that graphics cards will continue to use more and more for a while longer then it will come down, just like cpu's.

Considering a Crossfire + Athlon FX-62 rig can be run quite happily on a 450W PSU, that will be a while.

Assuming the report about 250W is BS, naturally.

no need to tell me, ive got a beastie of a system running on a 400 watt Akasa pax power, which is one of the reasons why i find this article hard to believe.
