R600 or G80

I dont get half of these posts , way I see it if Nvidia have a nice card out when I need a new gfx card then thats what I'll buy if its ATI at the time I need a card then thats the way I'll go , I don't undertstand why people go into this fanboy mode cos Nvidia are on the top spot at the moment , just get whatever card is best for you that is out at the time u need one , jeez couldnt be much simpler really could it.

P.S. I prolly will get a 8800 if I save enuff cash in time , if r600 is out by the time I've saved enuff money and that proves to be the better card then thats what i'll get. doh! I'm repeating myself ;)

I wouldn't say i'm a fanboy of either, however a very bad experience with an nVidia card means that I would choose ATi over them where possible.

However I wouldn't let it get so bad that i'd never buy an nVidia card as a result of this - I tend to alternate between the two in fact.

^^ nVidia would have to do something special to get my money, had very bad experience with them too.

R600 2 months after launch is still my choice.

Exactly.

I call that "being human" rather than being a fanboy.

If you bought an AMD processor and had RMA after RMA, drivers that wouldn't work, and problems, it would make you think twice before buying another one, right? In fact, you'd probably be more inclined to go Intel next time i'd think.

I'n the same, albeit it was a while ago, Ti4600 died after a week, and replacement MX440 kept making my monitor go black, replaced that with a 9700 pro, no problems at all.

not the first batch. proof is around that all subsequent batched are bodged too. and its not looking good for the g80 too.

Really ok didn't know that, I knew there were a lot of returns but didn't realise it was that widespread :o

...G80 bad too?

you serious?

II wonder how many ppl have donated even £1 to Children in need that will post in this thread ? :)

Not me, they don't give a **** about the children, if they did they wouldn't only do children in need at christmas, why do they have to do it at christmas, whats wrong with the rest of the year, they not important then thats why.

Apart from the normal failure rate you would expect with any card I have not read anything that would suggest any issues with the G80.

Werent you the one giving us grief for spending all that money buying G80's?

i reckon R600 will beat G80 by a fair margin, and forget all the fanboy crap that gets dished out (using nvidia cards), my reason for thinking this are 1) ATI have more experience in the unified-shader architecture 2) R600 is supposidly a HEAVILY revised and upgraded version of 'xenos' which is already a graphics powerhouse 3) everyone creamed in there pants about the 'supposed G80 specification' so until then quit the whole 'speculation' rubbish.

lets think about this logically, what is ATI and AMD capable of:

1) 65nm manufacturing by Q4 2006, ATI would have access to this as well

2) 512-bit two-way ringbus memory interface, sure why not, X1800+ had 512-bit (256-bit bi-direction) interface, so i don't see how this is hard to believe

3) 1024mb memory, memory is evolving all the time, so i don't see how this is unfeasable either

4) 64 unified pipelines, xenos had 48 i believe and this is a heavily improved variant of xenos

5) 800mhz core clock, definately possible if its 65nm

6) 200W power consumption, well this is either bull, or R600 is gonna be FAR more efficient than we think

but i don't see how any of this is unfeasable, infact sounds pretty plausable, all i can say is wait for R600 before deciding how good or bad its gonna be, i have a strange feeling people might be pleasantly suprised by ATIs latest offering. (and before anyone even adds it, im not working for ATI propaganda team or anything, just rumours floating around the net) :p

From my point of view I think it will be worth waiting a month or two (early 2007) to see what goodies spring out the ATI camp. Hopefully by then the current nVidia card will drop in price a bit, its a win win situation (unless you wanna do some 3D marking over Xmas!)

Hmm DX10 hardware is here! :)

Im all for waiting to see what happens when r600 is released.
If only to see if the g80 realy does have dx10 support or simply carries the dx10 name alone like the gfFX before it with dx9 just to say they got there first.

I agree.
Same thing with the HD support, only the new ones support HD, like to play HD movies from HDDVD or BLUE RAY ROM;with the HDCP chip. You could waste money on a 7950 and not being able to play HD.
Personally I waste in a 7900GT 512MB.
