R7 270 review thread

Hi there

OcUK has not launched this product.

The price of it is £139-£159 to end user, see competitors for proof of this.

Were selling the faster 270X for £146.99, so when the price difference is sub £10 and its a slower product it seems completely pointless.

We shall hang back until we can get a deal which brings them close to the £129.99 mark making the price gap closer to £20 and more logical.

HIS Radeon R9 270X IceQ BOOST 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (H270XQ2G2M) @ £146.99 inc VAT

The card has the latest Boost Clock technology, providing extra performance for the most demanding games and applications!

IceQ ensures effective cooling when there is another card in front blocking the fan inlet, such as in CrossFire setup. By expelling the hot air, IceQ removes all the heat generated by the GPU out of the computer chassis, prevents the hot air from accumulating inside and enhancing the overall stability. The more crowded the chassis, the greater will be the impact. The demonstration shows that the IceQ does outperform the 3rd party cooler in closed environment. Cool air is drawn from both sides of the fan and hot air is forced out of the computer case. This ensures effective cooling when there is another card in front blocking the fan inlet, such as in CrossFire setup. Black hole impeller ensures large amount of cool air is ready. It draws cool air from both sides of the fan even there is another card blocking the fan inlet on the front.

PCB might easily warped due to prolonged hanging on motherboard & casing, potentially causing cracks on BGA solder joints and resulting in malfunctioning of the card. The HIS special metal rib provides extra strength to the PCBs to avoid warpage, making the cards extra stable and durable. You can count on HIS cards to game hard for 24/7/365 for years!

Launch pricing is always going to have its share of issues as some retailers just add a premium for newness. Its good to hear OcUK is not going to do that.

However, for the SFF PC crowd like myself, the R9 270 looks a great fit. The cards are shorter and the power requirements are less than an HD7870. Performance per watt might be greater than my GTX660! The traditional Nvidia card length advantage is not even there this time.

For a normal build though, the R7 270X is probably better value I suspect.

That is the problem, there is no premium, for us to sell at £139.99 Inc. VAT, making it exactly £7 less than a faster 270X version, we've be making less than 10% margin, we make less than 10% on the 270X as well, just so its a fair basis.

So no etailors are trying to make any additional profit, because if they do it will cost more than 270X or the same as our cost price difference between 270 and 270X is less than $10 from the manufacturer. Hence the product makes absolutely ZERO sense.

It needs a more sizable price difference!

The ASUS and MSI cards would be great value at £130, especially with BF4. Certainly something I would like to see at OcUK as I consider an upgrade to my card. I need a relatively short card to fit in my Antec SOLO and only have 6 pin PCIE leads from my PSU.

Many of the R270X cards, including the HIS above are too long.

R270 is identical to R270X in dimensions, its the same card. ;)

That's not the case for HIS. Not sure about ASUS and MSI as they haven't yet updated their sites.

R270X - 27cm
R270 - 22.4cm

Agreed that near £140-£150 the R270 is too expensive. £130 and under would be a sweet spot.

HI there

OK that makes it worthwhile getting the HIS one then, if its smaller as that at least makes it more unique, shall get that on website before end of week.

Sapphire have done us a pretty good deal, still not great, but check these pair out:-

The "dual" in Dual-X refers to the two highly advanced cooling fans that are coupled with multi-heatpipe technology to cool mid-to high-end graphics cards. The fans are amazing: each blade boasts a sleek airfoil shape that increases cool air throughput so they can run slower. Even when you're pushing the processing power to the limits. Even when your're overclocking.

The quiet-running fans work with multi-heatpipes and heatsinks that take away heat from the processor to the fans. Plus, dust repelling bearings radically reduce failure caused by the build-up of dirt. In short, its a quiet, efficient way of cooling your graphics card - even when you're pushing it to the limits.

Not followed all the partner SKU's yet, but from the reference design point of view that's not the case. The biggest difference between them at the reference spec level is that R9 270 is a sub 150W board while the R9 270X is >150W, hence the 270 needs only one AUX power connector while the 270X needs two. Reference PCB's and cooling are different as a result.
