R7 2700 vs 2700x?

Does the 2700 overclock easily to 2700x performance? Same way last gen it was wise to buy a 1700 and overclock it to match 1700x.

Still the case? Whats the best buy?
 
2700X is better I think, as you'll need to buy a decent cooler to get 2700 to 2700X levels which eats into any savings you might make on CPU anyway

Edit: 2700X has 10% off at the mo

I already have X62 cooler. Even with 10% off it's still quite a lot more than the 2700.

had a 1600 bought a 2600X due to default XFR2 makes it an easy buy IMO.
same applies to 2700x IMO
 
From what I've read and understand the 2700x is the better choice as it clocks itself higher for single threaded use, I'm not sure if the 2700 does the same or how high it clocks. I wondered the same tbh or if it even works the same way on an X370 board.
 
I would just get the 2700x, a decent cooler means it boost to over 4ghz on all cores and 4.35 single. A few tweaks and it wil will boost to over 4.1 all core keeping the 4.35 single.
 
It will likely overclock to the same sort of all-core overclock as the 2700X, but there's certainly an argument with the latter that manual overclocking is potentially detrimental to performance outside of benchmarks and specific workloads, since SenseMI does such a good job of managing things (and boosting cores higher than is possible with manual overclocking).


Obviously that's much less relevant with the 2700, not only thanks to the lower clocks, but the much lower TDP that limits what SenseMI can do.
 
I already have X62 cooler. Even with 10% off it's still quite a lot more than the 2700.

Prices on the 2700X vary from as low as £280 up to £319, and the 2700 from £250 to £280. I'd grab the cheapest 2700X I could find, and sell the cooler on the MM for £30, net cost is then the same. :)
 
Quick question - that I dont want to make a new thread for - Would it be mad to buy an 8700K now? is Intels 8C16T just round the corner? Or just buy new CPU now
 
I bought a 2700X about 3 weeks ago for £241 on OC-UK.

When I look at how much one costs today it is £285 but they are giving you a gracious 10% off it is listed at £314!

The same thing has occurred with 8pack RAM kits. I purchased mine for £174. The current price is £199, reduced from £229. WTF?

I recall a few of the items I got were reduced, but I don't think anywhere reduced by more than 10%!
 
There is no guarantee that you'll manage 3200MHz with that kit, and the timings could do with being a bit lower to get the most from the CPU, you might be able get them down to 14-14-14 with more volts and a bit of luck. :)

It says 3200Mhz? surely thats the speed of the RAM?

That is the speed the RAM is rated to run at, as a maximum, without being out of specification based on the manufacturers settings. However, Ryzen platforms are very fussy with RAM, and as such you sometimes find that your board/CPU combo doesn't like the RAM. You might end up getting 2933Mhz, or 3066MHz, or you may indeed be lucky and get 3200MHz, you'd be better off with one of the kits that have Samsung B-die chips on, since these are much more likely to work at the rated speeds.

Not 100% sure if that G.Skil kit is B-die or not.

Joe public brings the system home, builds it, turns it on and uses and has no idea that most things are under clocked out of the box, especially RAM.

I would wait for the 8pack 3600 kits to come back down in price. They are currently £199.
