Any advice on sorting out black screens on a 290.
Only pops up in games, running up todate drivers, max temp 38c
Will run 3d mark and fur mark no problems but black screens out of games after about 10mins then back to desktop. Some times I get driver crash message.

Stock clocks, water cooled

edit.

I just had to send a GPU back for repair because of the same-thing.. Black screens mostly happen when you run a bad Overclock seeing you running your stock..

You tried different, drivers? If like me once you tried everything sadly the GPU might need replacing.

I think you should send it back since you run it on stock clock. Or you might want to install a different driver version?

Sorry to say but the only "cure" is to send it back.

Think that can improve it are:

Fresh install of windows (rule out software and/or driver issues).
Underclocking the RAMs speed.
Bios updates for motherboard.

From what i know some times PSUs can be the culprit I.e. bad quality PSUs or older units. What PSU do you have?

Honestly, just send it back and save yourself hassle.

Are you uninstalling your GPU drivers before you install newer ones?

When I first bought my 290 I didn't and ended up with quite a few issues.

I have done fresh install on new SSD's this weekend,
GPU is well out of warranty, i got card via a trade on MM
PSU is a 3 month out Seasonic G 750w
i will try older drivers any advice on stable ones to try

What i dont get is i have had a faulty 280x and it was faulty in everything, but the 290 is rock solid in bench/stress testing.

i gave is 40min of furmark last night and it was fine, didnt even brake a sweat at 44c
just run 3 loops of 3dmark fire strike and fine.

guess i better but i new card.

I was getting black screens when I first installed my 290x (also a trade on the MM). To fully resolve it, I removed the drivers and used DDU, installed the latest drivers, set up a custom fan profile in Afterburner and downclocked the memory by 100Mhz.

I've since done a fresh install of Windows and have been able to return the memory to 1250.

Furmark is a pretty useless test. It's just good for heating your room up.

It is a pain, but thankfully it doesn't Impact performance too much.

Like you, I bought my card from the MM, so I'm not sure if it has something to do with how cards have been treated in the past (mined with, for e.g.)

TBF there is a lot of 290 cards out there that are damaged from heat. if the GPU is at 95c the cooler is at 95c so all the parts touching are also at 95c its just not good am not bothered what AMD say, when i had stock cooler fitted when gaming i could not touch the cooler it was so hot at some points.

just not good  i may go team green

I'd be very interested in your facts/links to back up that statement. I've seen lots of people on forums say they felt 94C was too hot for a GPU to run, but I've never seen anyone back this up with facts. AMD have said lots of times that it's perfectly safe to run at that temperature, and as they designed the card, know it's limits, and would have to ultimately pay for replacements if they're wrong, I'm more inclined to believe them.

OP - if the card won't run stock clocks on a fresh install, then it's faulty and needs to be returned. If that isn't an option, then the only way forward is to try underclocking/undervolting it until you find a stable position. It sucks, but it looks like those are your only options sadly.

forget the GPU, what about the PCB, solder, ram chips and so on

Before I changed my Motherboard to allow better spacing, I ran my top GPU most the time at 94C for good couple months with no issues..

The difference here is the 290/x are rated to reach 94c a lot the ref cards do hit 94c

It would be a different story if the GPUs wasn't rated for such heat.
