My XFX R9 290 today stopped working, the card had the reference R9 290 cooler taken off since the card was overheating and since i'm an enthusiast, i've put an NZXT Kraken G10 and a Corsair H55 onto the card with no physical damage to the card and only a very mild overclock on the card.

The card is no longer detected along side my main R9 290X card.

Was working perfectly, then turned it on today and got a BSOD to find the second card was no longer detected.

I managed to get into the OS where the card was no longer detected either

I have tried the card by itself and no POST at all.

Does XFX allow modification of the coolers at all?

Thanks

If you bought it from oCuk and you haven't damaged anything it's covered, bought from anywhere else, it's not covered.

Any cooling on the VRMs? A number of people using Krakens on 290/290X have had their cards go pop.

Not the op but I have overheated the VRM's to 130c before and they would give warning signs normally before going pop, lockups/bsod or driver crashes would go first.

@OP if you still have the reference cooler and you brought it from OcUK then I would put it on and send it back and just see what happens.

The biggest issue is that too many people think that can just use the G10 without and ram or vram sink on the card...and possibly the biggest cause of killing their cards.

I think there is at least one member here who took out 2 if not 3 cards in the space of a week before packing it in!

Running without RAM heatsinks is fine, but without VRM is a big nono.

Sorry for late reply, yes all the VRM's had heatsinks on them, I was doing benchmark runs when the PC froze (presumably because of this) and I always monitor all the temps inc. VRM temps throughout the benchmarking and they hit no more than 70C when they were benched.

Also, i've spoke to XFX and they said they would honor the warranty providing the original cooler is back on the card and that there is no physical damage to the card (of which there is none)

Result, well done XFX.
