Im on a very tight budget, I have been looking to upgrade for a while, I was running 260gtx in sli, but I got serious over heating issues and bbod quite frequently, so Ive wanted a single better card for a while.

I really like the r9 290, just I have been told it may be better to wait for none reference cards due to them running slightly hot. I'm really stretching my budget as it is if I were to buy the one you guy have in stock on sale.

If I wait am I likely to miss my chance of getting one at the price they are at now, or if I have a little patience is it likely ill be able to grab a none reference one maybe in some sort of Christmas or January sale for a similar or close price? Are these cards likely to go up,down or stay roughly the same is what Im basically asking :)

R9 290 is pretty good card even now. Just crack up the fan and live with it.
However I would advice you to wait for the custom ones.

You can still get an R9 290 now, and replace the heatsink with a custom one. (MK26 for example)

in tech world if you wait you will wait forever...lol

I am waiting for non ref 290 as well, however no news and cant see any new R9 2xx stock with the BF4 anywhere in the UK. (Gibbo said if AMD doesnt supply BF4 code then OCUK WILL NOT order anymore new R9 series)

Are you sure you searched enough in UK e-retailers about R9 290 and you found none. ;) Somewhere there are even 10 290X in stock of three different partners.

If OCUK stops selling R9 because AMD doesn't supply them with BF4, I do not see how will affect anyone other than OCUK tbh.

how much are they with the BF4?

I bought the same card at the same price but no added cooler and am very impressed, the more i look for an alternative for the same money the better i feel about my purchase...

QFE.

Bought a HIS R9 290 for £309.

Just spent £50 on an aftermarket cooler to make it bearable.

If you can find around any faulty HIS card with IceQ2 cooler on, change it with the one from the R9 290

Update: Based on your feedback, I took the IceQ X2 cooler off the HIS Radeon R9 280X and stuck it on our R9 290 sample. Cooling was dramatically improved. The FurMark stress test maxed out at 76 degrees while the card never exceeded 63 degrees in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4. So it seems as expected the board partners will be able to solve the heat issues of the reference card.

Betting that the custom R9 290 cards aren't going to be that expensive then.
